Minecraft and Roblox?
« on: April 12, 2018, 10:10:48 am »
Hello!

yesterday i tried installing Minecraft and Roblox on this laptop (Acer TravelMate 290, 2 GB RAM), which runs PM 8 flawlessly. Prior to installing the two, I installed wine and java (JRE); here the results:
- the Minecraft installer would run fine, updating itself and letting me log in to my account, however once running the game I'd get a blank screen (instead of the splash screen) and afterwards, the screen still plain white, I'd hear the Minecraft music in the background...  without the home screen. Plus, it froze my laptop completely, and took me several minutes of waiting for my  laptop to recognize my mouse's orders.
- installing the Roblox Player launcher went smoothly thanks to wine, but the game itself won't work. More precisely, if I ran the app it would open a web page redirecting me to the Roblox home page. If I then wanted to play a game from the browser (by default you need the launcher installed), nothing happened.

I figured I'd start over. I removed Roblox, Java and Minecraft from my laptop. Today I installed Oracle JDK 8 (https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-install-java-with-apt-get-on-ubuntu-16-04 , scroll down until you see it) instead of the default JRE (I know nothing about Java so I don't know if this actually changes something). I plan on installing Minecraft again; but without help, I'm not moving  :(

I'm a linux newbie btw, I'm learning terminal commands (very fun tbh) but installing programs is still tricky for me

Thank you to all for your help!

There you will find what you need to get minecraft running.
As for Roblox, I have no idea... Sorry but, I don't play! :(

The link sent me to another post, however the solutions provided didn't work for me; as I tried installing the .deb file they had linked, I was given the "armd64 architecture error" error.

So I'm back to start  :D

You've got a 32-bit processor then. Unfortunately your PC is probably a bit old to be running anything complex.

I have tried to do the roblox install as well.  At some point I am going to dig in and get it configured to work together with a linux browser and the wine exe of the roblox player.  I'll do a tutorial and post when I have it figured out.

For Minecraft in 32bit Peppermint 7/8 try this, open a terminal and run these commands in sequence...
(I don't know if this will work, but can't hurt to try right?)

First to install Oracle JAVA:
Code: [Select]
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/java
then:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get update
then:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install oracle-java8-installer oracle-java8-set-default oracle-java8-unlimited-jce-policy
when prompted for <OK> just hit enter.

when prompted for <YES> or <NO> use the left arrow key to highlight <YES> in red and hit enter.

when it finishes installing, check your Java version with:
Code: [Select]
java -version
and hopefully it'll return:-

Quote
java version "1.8.0_171"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_171-b11)
Java HotSpot(TM) 32-Bit Server VM (build 25.171-b11, mixed mode)

Okay now for the Minecraft JAVA Client...

Run:
Code: [Select]
mkdir -p ~/.minecraft/minecraft-installer
then
Code: [Select]
cd ~/.minecraft/minecraft-installer
then
Code: [Select]
wget https://launchpad.net/~flexiondotorg/+archive/ubuntu/minecraft/+files/minecraft-installer_1.8~xenial1.0_all.deb
then
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install ~/.minecraft/minecraft-installer/minecraft-installer_1.8~xenial1.0_all.deb
then you should find Minecraft in the main menu at:-

Menu > Games > Minecraft

To UNINSTALL
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get remove --purge minecraft-installer
then
Code: [Select]
rm -rv ~/.minecraft
then
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get remove --purge oracle-java8-installer oracle-java8-set-default oracle-java8-unlimited-jce-policy
