How to install proprietary intel graphics driver on tty1
« on: April 06, 2018, 09:59:50 pm »
On my Lenovo Netbook, I can boot the live usb installer of Peppermint 8, but after intalling the OS into the harddisk the computer cant boot. I suspected the non proprietary intel driver is not compatible in this netbook.
Whats the command to use in tty1 or in Terminal to install intel proprietary driver?

How to install proprietary intel graphics driver on tty1
« Reply #1 on: April 07, 2018, 02:17:21 am »
Update: i access grub during start up and choose recovery mode, and when in recovery mode i just choose normal boot and the OS will boot. But when I just let the computer boot without going to the recovery mode, the computer will not boot.
Why? What should I do so that the computer will boot normally.

2nd update: i installed ukuu, install kernel 4.15 and my computer booted. My computer cant boot on P8's kernel 4.13.0.38 and 4.13.0.32. But can boot on P8's 4.4.0.119 kernel.

Is it ok to use the 4.15.15 kernel in Peppermint 8?

Sure it's safe, but if you want to receive kernel updates the best way to do this would be to swap to the 16.04-edge HWE track .. so let's do this properly, can you post the output from:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install --install-recommends -s linux-generic-hwe-16.04-edge xserver-xorg-hwe-16.04
and
Code: [Select]
dpkg -l | grep 4.13.0
?

I'm willing to install P8 all over again to have a proper installation. Just need help on what to do after a fresh install if my pc will not boot on the kernel included in the installer.

HI Ikon, how’s it going :)?  Hold on before doing a fresh install.  Wait for PCNetSpec to get back to you, doing anything drastic  The man is a wonder  ;).

For future reference, could you please remember to encapsulate all terminal outputs with the Insert, Code # function.  For extra long outputs, please use the Spoiler, Sp function.  If you’re a Chromium Browser and/or a Google Chrome user, please don't combine these functions.  For some reason they don’t work well together with these browsers.  Only use one or the other  ;).  These forum functions preserve the original format of the output.  This makes it easier for future visitors to relate to their own issues.  These functions are found in the forum editor, above the,  :-[ Embarrassed and  the :'( Cry emoticon respectively.  Use the Preview button to check how it'll look in the forum.  This time, I've done it for you - many thanks  ;).
Backup! Backup! Backup! If you're missing any of these -  you ain't Backed Up!
For my system info please L/click HERE.

Sorry, somehow I'd missed you last posting.

Anyway, to switch to the hwe-16.04-edge track, run:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install --install-recommends linux-generic-hwe-16.04-edge xserver-xorg-hwe-16.04
then REBOOT.

Then post the output from:
Code: [Select]
uname -a

I'm currently have this kernels:
4.15.15-041515 - this is what I install using UKUU when my PC can't boot on the Default Kernel included in the P8 installation and is presently the default kernel booting in Grub. Should I remove this Kernel?
4.15.0-13 - I guess this is the "recommends linux-generic-hwe-16.04-edge xserver-xorg-hwe-16.04". Should I make this the default Kernel to boot?
4.4.0-119 - this Kernel is  included when I first install P8.

Code: [Select]
Linux Netbook 4.15.15-041515-generic #201803311331 SMP Sat Mar 31 17:48:42 UTC 2018 i686 i686 i686 GNU/Linux

Post the output from:
Code: [Select]
dpkg -l | grep 4.4.0
and
Code: [Select]
dpkg -l | grep 4.13.0
and
Code: [Select]
dpkg -l | grep 4.15.0
and
Code: [Select]
dpkg -l | grep signed
and can you confirm whether or not you would know how to boot into a specific kernel if asked to do so ?

Damn, missed one .. what's the output from:
Code: [Select]
dpkg -l | grep 4.15.15
Can you also post the output from:
Code: [Select]
inxi -Fz
and the output from this simulated run of removing the 4.4.0 kernels (just wanna check nothing else is depending on it before actually doing it)
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get remove --purge -s linux-generic linux-headers-4.4.0-119 linux-headers-4.4.0-119-generic linux-headers-generic linux-image-4.4.0-119-generic linux-image-extra-4.4.0-119-generic linux-image-generic

and before we delete the 4.15.15 kernel, can you confirm you're able to boot into the 4.15.0-13 generic kernel, and that everything works ?
