help with installing Claw-mail
« on: March 30, 2018, 12:39:49 pm »
so i am not knowledgeable enough to get this email client to install.
i get a config error that references pkg-config is missing.
i went to the freedesktop.org and got the pkg-config 0.29.2 tar file.
ran ./configure in the pkg-config directory and now get a "configure: error: Either a previously installed pkg-config or "glib-2.0 >= 2.16" could not be found".

not sure where to go from here.
any help is much appreciated.

Hi s2

Claws-Mail is available from the repos (which is the best and safest way to install software) you'll find it in Synaptic Package Manager Menu>System>Synaptic Package Manager or the Software Manager Menu>System>Software Manager

or alternatively open the terminal Ctrl>Alt>t type the following command at the command prompt

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install claws-mail

Good luck

A bit of friendly advice - you should really try to break the windows habit of downloading software directly from the internet and use the package managers instead, not only is it easier but they are also a major component of the Linux security model .. pkg-config is also in the default repos, so there was no need to download and compile it ;)

That said, you don't need pkg-config to install claws-mail, just do what emegra suggested above.

The Linux way of doing things, is infinitely more secure than the Windows way  Use the forum as and when you need it.  In fact, as someone new to Linux, ask questions here before you install something, or make any modifications.  That's what the forum is for.  No one is going to bite, we've all been newbies and know what it's like ;D.  Do this and you'll very quickly get a firm grasp of how your system works and how to manage it.  It's also an immensely enjoyable learning process.  Looking forward to reading your questions :).

Yep, if at any stage you don't understand what we're saying, or have any questions at all .. just ask .. we're here to help, but it's sometimes easy for us to forget how daunting some of the Linux terminology can be for people just starting out on their Linux journey :)

Have you elected to allow "less secure apps" as suggested here:
https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/apps/_mCQSuYV4f8

Quote
In order to rectify this you will need to turn on access to "less secure apps" by going to the following link while signed in using the account you wish to delegate and switching the setting On.

https://www.google.com/settings/security/lesssecureapps

If you are receiving an error stating that the setting is not allowed to be changed by the admin, you will first need to:

1. Go to admin.google.com

2. Go Security > Basic Settings > Go to settings for less secure apps

3. Select the option to allow users to manage their access to less secure apps

4. Save changes.

Over the year's I've tried configuring ClawsMail many times as an exercise.  I think I managed it once and promptly forgot how I did it.  I came to the conclusion that a mail client that awkward to configure, isn't worth bothering with.  There isn't even a decent tutorial on YouTube.  For a local email client, I recommend Thunderbird.  It's easy to install and configure  ;).
