how to sync photos from iphone SE
« on: March 11, 2018, 03:02:17 pm »
Hi, i have some photos on my iphone that i want to sync to an app in Peppermint, preferably Shotwell.  When I plug in the phone, the following happens

1.  iphone is instantly recognizable in "Files" File Manager under Devices.
2.  on the iphone, a message pops up requesting permission to access photos and videos.  I click "allow".
2.  when i click on iphone in the file manager, instead of seeing files or folders there is a message that says "The Media Contains Digital Photos" followed by a button that says "Open Shotwell Photo Manager".
3.  I click on "Open Shotwell Photo Manager"
4.  Shotwell opens and gives an error message-- "Unable to fetch previews from the camera; Could not claim the USB device (-53)
5.  I click OK, then select "iphone" from the "camera" options in the left column of Shotwell
6.  in the picture window, shotwell says "Starting import, please wait..."
7.  nothing ever happens.

additional information-- i have windows 10 on this same laptop.  when i boot to windows 10 and connect the phone, it is instantly recognized and has no problems viewing the thumbnails of photos/videos on the iphone and asking me if i want to import.
but i hate windows.

ios 11.2.6 on my iphone.  up to date.
peppermint OS 64 bit, up to date as of 5 minutes ago.
dell lattitude e6430s

any ideas for how i can somehow use PeppermintOS to access and download my iphone photos?
thanks,
mick

Can't speak specifically about iPhone smarties, but ...

My phone runs on top of Android 7.1.1 Nougat.

Peppermint recognizes my Lenovo/Motorola Moto, but I need to go into the USB settings in my phone and choose what I want to do over the USB connection.

The choices are:
  • Charge this device (the default setting every time I plug it in)
  • Transfer files
  • Transfer photos (PTP)
  • Use device as MIDI
Perhaps iPhones have similar settings  :-\

Don't ask me why, but for iPhones you have to mount them, unmount them, then mount them again before the contents are displayed ???

1) Connect the phone

2) say "Allow" to the message on the iPhone

3) open the file manager, and click the iPhone in left hand column to mount it.

4) still in the file manager, right click the iPhone in the left hand column and select "Unmount"

5) still in the file manager, click the iPhone in the phone in the left hand column to mount it again.

You should now see the DCIM folder containing your pictures.

Again, I cannot speak for Apple, but ...

I think the reason for the pick n' choose USB settings on my Android phone is... security.

For instance, those *free* charging stations you see in airport concourses, and so forth, suck the data and pics out of your phone, as soon as you plug it in.  On my Android, you need to auth transfers over the USB port.

'10' is probably doing the same. LoL!  :D

Just saying ...

did the DCIM folder appear in the file manager ?

We need to remove Shotwell from the equation to clear any misunderstanding here .. at the moment I just want to know if the DCIM folder displayed in the file manager after plug/allow/mount/unmount/mount ?

thank you for getting back to me!  and no, the DCIM folder did NOT appear.
mount/unmount/mount/  (plus a few more for good measure), but no DCIM folder.

Weird, works on my iPhone 6, it was scifidude79 that figured that out and I'm pretty sure he has an SE.

You're not unplugging the phone to unmount it are you ?
