Not able to connect to the internet through Ethernet
« on: March 06, 2018, 02:43:17 am »
hello,
I am not able to connect my desktop using ethernet cable to my router. When I connect the router with a cable to the lan card on my desktop , the led turns on at the both the end of the lan card in my desktop and the router but the computer does not show any internet connection.

I am using peppermint 7 on the desktop. I could connect with the same ethernet cable to my laptop which runs Iinum Mint.
The lan card is Realtek semiconductor co., Ltd. RTL-8100/8101L/8139 i think so not sure.

What happens if you run:
Code: [Select]
sudo rmmod -f 8139cp
then
Code: [Select]
sudo mii-tool enp1s11 -F 100baseT-FD
then
Code: [Select]
sudo rmmod -f 8139too
then
Code: [Select]
sudo modprobe 8139too
does ethernet then start to work ?

Okay let's try something...

But copy/paste these commands to a text file because you're entering some commands incorrectly.

Open a terminal and run:
Code: [Select]
echo "blacklist 8139cp" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-8139cp.conf
then
Code: [Select]
sudo update-initramfs -u
then
Code: [Select]
gksudo pluma /etc/default/grub
find the line that reads
Code: [Select]
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""
and change it to
Code: [Select]
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="net.ifnames=0 biosdevname=0"
SAVE the file and exit the text editor.

Back in the terminal run:
Code: [Select]
sudo update-grub
Now REBOOT to test.

To Undo
Code: [Select]
sudo rm -v /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-8139cp.conf
then
Code: [Select]
sudo update-initramfs -u
then
Code: [Select]
gksudo pluma /etc/default/grub
find the line that reads
Code: [Select]
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="net.ifnames=0 biosdevname=0"
and change it to
Code: [Select]
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""
SAVE the file and exit the text editor.

Back in the terminal run:
Code: [Select]
sudo update-grub
Now REBOOT, and you'll be back where you are now.

I copy pasted the commands in a text file and ran them as suggested by you but there was no difference in the ethernet connection.

What happens if you now run:
Code: [Select]
sudo rmmod -f 8139cp
then
Code: [Select]
sudo mii-tool eth0 -F 10baseT-FD
then
Code: [Select]
sudo rmmod -f 8139too
then
Code: [Select]
sudo modprobe 8139too
does ethernet then start to work ?

I take it you've tried the cable in a different port on the router ?

natarajan@natarajan-desktop ~ $ sudo rmmod -f 8139cp
[sudo] password for natarajan:
natarajan@natarajan-desktop ~ $ sudo mii-tool eth0 -F 10baseT-FD

The status remains the same as before no ethernet connection and yes i have tried it in different ports on the router.

Can you run:
Code: [Select]
dmesg > ~/Desktop/dmesg-output.txt

you should then see a text file on your desktop called "dmesg-output.txt"

Can you host that on a site such as
http://www.tinyupload.com/
and post a link to it here.

Has this hardware ever been tested in another OS ?

Have you tried another PCI slot on your motherboard, does your motherboard have its own Ethernet port?

What type of computer.
