installing HP printer using HPLIP and CUPS (SOLVED)
« on: July 18, 2014, 06:18:22 am »
hi pepermints,
running Pepermint 5 on a desktop computer and trying to install a HP LaserJet 1018.
Have instaled HPLIP GUI from the Software Manager and I'm stuck at the point where the installation is asking to install a proprietary plugin and a user and password with user `root` which is not mine and no option to change it, hence not allowing me to proceed.
whenever I try to change the `cupsd.conf` it doesn't allow me to save the file, saying `I don't have the right permissions to do it`
Any way to overcome this?

Hi damig, have you tried doing this?  I don't often use a printer but the last one I installed was done using this. Have your printer attached to your computer.  Select your printer from the drop down menu from menu>SystemTools>Printers? It should search for the driver, install it and you are good to go.  No passwords needed.  As a reference, the recommended driver can be found at this address: https://www.openprinting.org/printer/HP/HP-LaserJet_1018.  I hope this helps  ;).

thx for reply Andy, I wish it was that simple...
during this period of installation, it locates the driver, notifies me it needs a proprietary plugin, and to install it, asks for a login with `root` as username and doesn't allow me to change it

Oh well it was worth a try.  I presume you have tried entering your user password?

tried, it's not usable since the username (unchangeable) is different than mine (root)
Can you at least tell me how to change the cupsd.conf file? It doesn't allow me saving the changes...
This forum answer is exactly what I can do http://hplipopensource.com/node/231 but it doesn't allow me to save the change. It says `you don't have privileges` when I try to set the privileges it says ` Error setting permissions: Operation not permitted`.
Linux is toughhhhhh... >:(
do you know how can I run the installation from terminal?

Run:
Code: [Select]
hp-plugin
and it should fire up a GUI  installer that prompts for YOUR password.

If it still asks for "root", try starting it with:
Code: [Select]
sudo hp-plugin
