Black text below desktop icons cannot be seen
« on: February 19, 2018, 07:36:21 pm »
For 6 of the 23 widget styles, the text below icons on the desktop turns black, with no drop shadow of a different colour. This makes that text impossible to read when it is over a dark section of wallpaper. I have not found any supplied wallpaper for which this is not a problem.

I think this text should stay as white with a black drop shadow, as it does in Mint.

Please can this be fixed? In the meantime, is there a workaround?

The 6 widget styles are Clearlooks, Crux, Industrial, Mist, Raleigh, Redmond & ThinIce.

PS. Another issue: I have to use Raleigh, as with all other styles there are no scrollbar buttons in Thunderbird.

Hi paulr,

Please ask about only one issue per thread. For your second issue, start a new thread with an appropriate Subject: line.

Are Clearlooks, Crux, Industrial, Mist, Raleigh, Redmond & ThinIce available in Mint ?

If so, which version of Mint ?

Mint Xfce doesn't use Nemo to control the desktop, Nemo is a gtk-3.0 application so requires themes have a gtk-3.0 components if you want to be able to manually change the desktop text colour.

The themes you mentioned are all very old themes without a gtk-3.0 component .. they were only installed in Peppermint because they were pulled in by something (possibly an Xfce component we use) as a dependency.

You'll need to find a theme that has both gtk-2.0 and gtk-3.0 components.

BTW, if you want the scrollbar stepper buttons in Thunderbird (in Peppermint 8), you could run:
Code: [Select]
gksudo /usr/share/themes/Peppermix-Light-7-Red/gtk-3.0/gtk-widgets.css
find the lines
Code: [Select]
    -GtkScrollbar-has-backward-stepper: false;
    -GtkScrollbar-has-forward-stepper: false;
and change them to
Code: [Select]
    -GtkScrollbar-has-backward-stepper: true;
    -GtkScrollbar-has-forward-stepper: true;
SAVE the file and exit the text editor.

Then use the "Thunderbisrd Theme Lock" in the Peppemint Settings Panel .. to force Thunderbird to use the "Peppermix-Light-7-Red" theme.

If you want a different theme in Thunderbird, you'll have to find those lines in the gtk-widgets.css file of your current theme.

Or use a theme that has them by default.

Thanks PCNetSpec. I got the modifications to gtk-widgets.css working.

The themes I mentioned, that apparently got pulled in accidentally, are the ones I like best (although I'm not sure I can use them in Peppermint unless the text colour issue is addressed).

I copied a "gtk-3.0" folder from a theme that had one into a theme that didn't have one, and it seemed to be picked up ok, so it seems to be fairly straightforward to get the desktop icon text the right colour for these themes, and to make the scrollbars appear in the ballpark of what a user would expect in the applications that are currently ignoring them (Text Editor is another one). By "in the ballpark" I mean at least give them buttons when buttons are expected, and the width expected.

I found I could change the scrollbar width to what looked about right with "-GtkRange-slider-width:19px". Maybe there is a better way as Googling suggests this might be deprecated.

I could not get the  "Thunderbird Theme Lock" to work in the way that you suggested though. It seems like it might be forcing Thunderbird to lock on to some unspecified, hidden theme, rather than a particular one you can choose.

Code: [Select]
cat /usr/lib/peppermint/adjustments/thunderbird
should give you an idea which theme the Thunderbird Theme Lock is pointing at.
(which depends on your version of Peppermint)

Thanks. I believe I understand how that works now. I had been testing an older version of Peppermint, in which it was pointing at Peppermix-Light-7.

If I understand things correctly, gtk3 scrollbars have not been set up right in most of the themes in Peppermint. For example, all the Peppermix themes have scrollbar buttons in "Customise Look and Feel" and most places in the system, but in Text Editor and Thunderbird (both gtk3 I presume) they have no scrollbar buttons and the scrollbar width is wrong. "Greybird" is in fact the only theme I found for which scrollbars looked and behaved as expected in gtk3 applications.

It seems the desktop icon text colour issue can be fixed by copying a gtk-3.0 folder into the relevant themes. Am I safe doing that, or might there be unexpected consequences?

Sure it's "safe" .. the only consequences would be some changes to the theme.

Those are the xfwm4 themes .. they only change the window decorations.

If you want to change the desktop icon text colour, you'll need to edit/change the gtk theme in

Menu > Settings > Customise Look and Feel > Widget (tab)
