There is no such thing as Peppermint 8.5 .. both Peppermint 8, and Peppermint 8 installed via the respun ISO image are "Peppermint 8".

A "respin" is just a refreshing of the ISO image so it includes the latest updates, and 'maybe' a few minor tweaks/changes .. it is NOT another full release.

If you want to know if you installed Peppermint 8 via the original ISO or the respin ISO .. well we swapped out lightdm-gtk-greeter with slick-greeter in the respin....

So if you run:
Code: [Select]
dpkg -l | grep greeter
if it returns lightdm-gtk-greeter you installed Peppermint 8 from the original Peppermint 8 ISO image.

If it returns slick-greeter you installed Peppermint 8 from the Peppermint 8 Respin ISO image

But in either case you are running Peppermint 8

Another way to tell is to check what version of Nemo (file manager) you have. 8 Respin is on 3.4.7, the original 8 release came with 2.8.7.

Yeah I've seen .. it' is something we're considering for Peppermint 9 though, it'd probably be less confusing than "respin", specially if we need to release a "respin-2". It'd also remove the confusion where people make systemback backups of their Peppermint system and distribute it as a Peppermint "spin" (or worse, where they incorrectly use the term "respin" to describe their custom spin).

Bit off topic, but in regards to P9; Since LXDE is merging with LXQT, will Peppermint continue to use a modified GTK  LXSession? Or is XFCE in consideration? Not that it would make a huge difference either way since very little of LXDE is preserved here.
I do quite like the tabbed settings panel and consolidated keybinding/window manager applet (Peppermint Control Center)  currently in use though. It would be unfortunate if those didn't survive the transition. if there is any such transition

We're currently considering a few options for the medium to long term, but in the short term Peppermint 9 will be based on 18.04 in which LXDE will very much still be alive and kicking.
