HELP - restore partitions! (SOLVED)
« on: July 11, 2014, 08:09:11 am »
So I had the boot problem explained in the other topic.
I tried solving it by re-installing P5.
I had all my data on a 200Gb partition, and the system on a 10Gb partition, plus a 1Gb swap partition. (no, I don't have an external HDD, no my connection doesn't allow me to use the Cloud to save Gbs of data... partitioning was my ONLY option right now)

Re-doing the installation steps I forgot to use the OTHER option to specifically point at one partition, and just went for the "Install P5 over P5" option.
I instantly tried stopping the process, and in the end resorted to manually shutting the computer down.
But it was too lare, the partitions were all gone.

The data MUST still be there, it can't have had time to delete anything except the partition table.
How can I restore it?

TestDisk is also available on the Hiren"s Boot Disk
It can be downloaded here:
http://www.hirensbootcd.org/download/
towards the bottom of the page is a link for the actual download: http://www.hirensbootcd.org/files/Hirens.BootCD.15.2.zip
If you burn the ISO to a disk you can boot into MiniXP and, I believe, repair your disk locally.
I haven't tested this myself, but, it should work.
TestDisk is located in the program menu under Recovery.
Good luck, I hope this helps.

i used a live usb Peppermint5 and tried TestDisk... maybe I did something wrong, but it found  the partition, but it says "unable to recover"

gParted just says "no partitions found"

OK, take a look at this:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=370121

on how to use "gpart" (not gparted) to get the partition info, then "parted" to rescue the partition(s)

Tried and failed, the result is as follows

Code: [Select]
Begin scan...
End scan.

Checking partitions...
Ok.

Guessed primary partition table:
Primary partition(1)
   type: 000(0x00)(unused)
   size: 0mb #s(0) s(0-0)
   chs:  (0/0/0)-(0/0/0)d (0/0/0)-(0/0/0)r

Primary partition(2)
   type: 000(0x00)(unused)
   size: 0mb #s(0) s(0-0)
   chs:  (0/0/0)-(0/0/0)d (0/0/0)-(0/0/0)r

Primary partition(3)
   type: 000(0x00)(unused)
   size: 0mb #s(0) s(0-0)
   chs:  (0/0/0)-(0/0/0)d (0/0/0)-(0/0/0)r

Primary partition(4)
   type: 000(0x00)(unused)
   size: 0mb #s(0) s(0-0)
   chs:  (0/0/0)-(0/0/0)d (0/0/0)-(0/0/0)r

According to gParted my SDA drive is partitioned like this:
SDA1 - ext4 - 297Gb ... of which 5Gb used I don't know for what
SDA2 - Extended - 1Gb
SDA5 - Swap - 1Gb (inside the SDA1)

I tried Parted with each one, and the result was the same for SDA, SDA1 and SDA5, while SDA2 just gave and error.

I'm now going to try with PhotoRec o_O

TestDisk says...

The following partitions can't be recovered:

linux partition 1 [home]
start 17479 115 45
end 55117 133 56
size in sectors 604655616

linux partition 2 [home]
start 17488 31 16
end 55126 49 27
size in sectors 604655616

EDIT:

I gave a better and calmer read at the TestDisk documentation and found out how to use it better.
The lost partitions are indeed irreparable... but I was able to access their contents and am now in the slooooooow process of copying them to a safer location :D
Once that is done I'll wipe everything and install P5... I'll keep you posted on the results.
