I've just installed Peppermint 8 on a Eee901. Once I formatted the /home partition rather than let it try reuse a Lubuntu installed encrypted home, It went well..

.. up to the point where I installed updates, including to the kernel, and rebooted again.

There are two problems with the 4.13.0-26 kernel that is the most current as of yesterday.

a) the touchpad doesn't work

b) more importantly, there is a screen issue: most of the screen (all but the right hand side) is covered by a black rectangle. If I use ctrl-alt-F2 to switch to a text terminal, this rectangle has a series of random white lines, with other colours appearing as text should appear. (Photos of this available!)

This happens on each boot. I can blindly type 'sudo shutdown now -r' to reboot, because the normal button from the menu is invisible.

So this is being done by booting into grub and selecting the 4.10.0-40 kernel from the original install instead. Obviously that has some issues, but it does actually work for me.

Checking, the Peppermint 8 live disc does work on an Eee900 (Intel Celeron rather than an early Atom, but otherwise very similar) and I am holding off actually installing it until this is fixed.

(This is an annoying anti-spam, by the way. Do users with more posts still get it?)

The captcha is only to stop spambots, after your first post is approved (ie. now) you'll not see it again ;)

As for the kernel, you could set the 4.10 kernel back as the default until upstream fix the kernel/graphics issue.

Can you post the output from:
Code: [Select]
inxi -Fz
so we can try to spot any pattern to hardware where this is occurring please.

Ah ha, the 'uncomment #GRUB_TERMINAL="console" in /etc/default/grub and then did sudo update-grub' worked, thank you.

At some point, various projects will realise that making something that many of us only see once every few months 'prettier' is not the best use of resources, especially when it comes with side-effects :)

Annoyingly, the 4.13.0-32 kernel doesn't get to a graphical screen at all - it just stays blank.

I'll see if nomodeset .works...
