(SOLVED) Desktop settings disappear
« on: July 14, 2014, 12:54:26 pm »
First of all I want again say thank you for the help I receaved so far.

My next question as layman to Linux is how I can keep the desktop settings
in order that I do not need to change the wallpaper and to get the clock again on my screen after booting the computer anew

From the Netherlands: Have a good time!  :)

Hi jozefmw, any changes you make to the desktop such as new wallpaper, different icon sizes etc should be persistent on restart.  If they are not, what is happening when you restart your computer?

First of all:

When  rebooting, some of the chosen preferences in regard to the desktop are gone:
The 'MacSlow's Cairo-clock' has gone.
The wallpaper has gone as well.    :D

The changed iconsize and -text remain correct. ;D

Other strange things:
1) When I click right on some icons, I get straight away the confirm window: 'Do you want to move the *.file to trash can?'  :-\

2) The energy settings don't work and the screen goes to sleep and I have to check in with my password after a short while of inactivity.
That happened even in the middle of a Skype call ... :'(  :D

I can assure you that it isn't supposed to do that.  I haven't come across this before.  Someone else should be able to give you an explanation and hopefully a solution.  Good luck  ;)!

Similar problem here! Energy settings are not loaded upon startup even though I selected them previously. That error resurfaces on every startup no matter how or where I sat the energy-settings to be persistant.

Hi Tina,

Thank you for sharing.

So I am not the only one in the world.
As a matter of fact, I have the same problems on my desktop, laptop and netbook.
So, I wonder what the reason could be, as it obviously is not a problem related to the hardware of just one computer.

It seems to be a bug in the software, which does not appear in every p.c..

Hopefully the developpers of the software will have a look at it.

I solved the problem of the disappearing wallpaper.

I had the image on a windows partition (I have Windows 8.1 on a second SSD)  and put it on a Linux partition.
The setting now remains.

The problem of the disappearing of the settings of the Power Manager and the Cairo Clock still remains.

I also wonder whether it is normal that I always have to reset the File Manger settings form 'Icon View' to 'Detailed List View' (using Strg - F4)

OK, there's a lot of separate issues being listed here .. can we deal with them one at a time in separate topics with descriptive titles please .. so people searching find it easier to find the solution(s), and so they can be marked as (SOLVED) separately if/when a solution is found.

Thanks in advance :)

I'll deal with the cairo-clock autostart issue here .. open a terminal and run:
Code: [Select]
cp -v /usr/share/applications/cairo-clock.desktop ~/.config/autostart/cairo-clock.desktop
Now log off/on or reboot to test.

Next, can you start a new topic called something like "File Manager forgets view mode after reboot" and describe the problem.. preferably in the "Software & Applications" forum.

Well, this worked as well. Thank you again !!!
Happy to find my clock back .... ;D

I had a look at various different systems and
I only can say that Peppermint was the first Linux OS I came across I really felt immediately very comfortable with.
Even in spite of the problems encountering by finding my way through this completely new land for me.
Because for every problem exists at least one solution ...

The ICE app makes it quite special, extremely fast and easy.
And the quick response and help is very encouraging as well.

I got your message to post one topic at the time  ;)
