Restore a folder under My Computer SOLVED
« on: January 25, 2018, 12:21:35 pm »
I inadvertently deleted the Video folder under My Computer. Is there a way to put that back?  :-[

Hi Ralph

Unless you've sent it to the recycle bin it's gone

it can be recovered using something like Photorec but's a bit involved, but if you are prepared to put yourself through that, don't write anything new to the drive meantime.

how did you manage to do it ?

I guess I didn't explain that right. What I deleted was just a shortcut. I did not have any data in the folder at the time I deleted it but I do use the Video folder from time to time.
When you are at the desktop, down on the bottom on the left side of the panel is a shortcut to Files manager. When you click on the icon a window opens, and on the left side of that window under the heading My Computer is a list of shortcuts starting with Home,Desktop,Documents,Music,Pictures, and then should be Videos. After that is Downloads,Recent, etc. So what you are saying is that short of reinstalling P8 there is no way to put that Videos shortcut back where it belongs?

No, I understood from your original post that you had actually deleted the Video folder so just to be sure the folder is still there can you open a terminal Ctrl+Alt-t and post the output of
Code: [Select]
ls -l

If you've just removed the shortcut in the menu on the left hand pane under My Computer your Video folder should still be visible in the main window if so click and drag the folder into the menu preferably in the correct alphabetical position under Pictures and that should restore it

Good luck

As emegra says, in the nemo file manager you can simply drag a folder from the main right-hand pane into the left-hand sidebar to create a shortcut there.

You have no idea of how many times I tried that. The reason it failed for me was probably because I dragged the icon to far to the left. I was trying to drop between the two folder. When I expanded the left pane to make it wider and then dragged the icon and stayed close to the right side the Video shortcut fell right into place. What a subtle  difference between the two OS's. Thanks for you help. I'm just plain red faced.
