(SOLVED) How to reduce iconsize on desktop
« on: July 13, 2014, 12:04:23 pm »
Hi,
I am quite new to Linux and find Peppermint the very best I came across. I must say I love it but I do have a few problems though.
As I am used to Windows I put a few icons (shortcuts) to the Desktop which appear huge on my Netbookscreen.  I tried in vain to find a way to reduce them in size.
Can somebody help?
Thank you in advance,
Jozef

Hi jozefmw, how's it going?  Good to know you are enjoying Peppermint  8).  Reducing the icon size is an easy one.  Open the file manager: menu>Accessories>File Manager PCmanFM .  Once that has opened select edit from the taskbar.  Select, Preferences then Display.  When that window opens you'll see the controls for icon sizes.

I have noticed that sometimes when changing the icon sizes, the positions of the icons become out of line.  To reset this. Right Click anywhere on the desktop.  Select, Desktop Preferences.  After the window opens, select Label Text Font.  Select OK from the new window.  The desktop icons will realign themselves.  I hope this helps, have fun   ;)!

Tip: To open the file manager from the command line, Open a terminal, Ctrl+Alt+t.  After the terminal opens enter:
Code: [Select]
pcmanfm
Hit enter and there is the file manager.

Thank you so much for your quick response AndyInMokum. That was really precise and comprehensive. ;D
What I actually forgot to ask is how I can remove the text (name) of the icon, as the symbol itself mostly will do.

Yes, completely new to Linux I enjoy Peppermint for being extremely fast in starting up, closing down in comparison to Windows.
And the update system is a luxury indeed.

As I have more questions. I guess I whave to mail a post for each different toppic here. Is that right?

By the way, in the meantime I got my neighbour to switch from Windows to Peppermint too. He was quite fed up with Windows and now is very happy with his new  OS. ;D

Have a nice day,
Jozef

Hi jozefmw, I'm happy it helped you out.  I have to admit, I have no idea how to remove the text from the desktop icons.  I'm sure someone will answer that one for you, (also for me for that matter.  I'm also interested).  Yes, you are correct.  Each new topic requires a new post in the appropriate forum.  Just have a look in the forum titles in the home page.  This will give you a good idea on the structure and what goes where  :).  When you feel that a topic has been resolved or closed, could you please mark it as, [SOLVED] in the Subject line of the original posting.  Many thanks and keep spreading the word  ;)!!!

I'm on my Ubu 14.10 Utopic (Gnome-Shell) desktop box, right now .

I removed the text by simply:
  • right-click the icon
  • select 'rename'
  • backspace to remove the existing text
  • spacebar to add an empty 'space'
  • enter key to save
Here is the result...

I *assume* the same applies to Peppermint.   Let me know, if it doesn't.

As in all_things_linux, there's more than one way to skin a cat -- 'dconf-editor' comes to mind...   ;)

There is no rename option right clicking on an icon.  I've tried going into the Properties and blanking out the name field.  All this does it revert back to the *.desktop name  :-\.

Sorry, I missed adding the spacebar.  That kind of works.  The highlighted icon shows the spacebar though.

I need to run, but...  you might try this, Andy (not the OP -- I don't want to confuse you).

Install 'dconf-editor'.  Use it to find the desktop icon FONT size, and change it to '0'.  There should be an entry in there, somewhere, for that.

That would be my next move.

As far as removing the text (name) of the desktop item: I came to an acceptable solution by going into the Properties and reducing the text to a strict minimum. One caracter will do.
Thank you all for your participation.

Can't be done in LXDE with PCManFM controlling the desktop.
