Peppermint 9 - GIMP 2.10.2
« on: June 22, 2018, 10:38:38 am »
For those that don't want the snap version of GIMP 2.10.2, we have it as a .deb version in this PPA
https://launchpad.net/~peppermintos/+archive/ubuntu/gimp-2.10.2

If you install GIMP from Software Manager or Synaptic you'll currently end up with version 2.8, or you can install version 2.10.2 as a snap from within Gnome Software (in the menu at Menu > System > Software)..

But if like me you'd like 2.10.2, but don't like snap/flatpak packages, and the way they:-

a) take up TONS of space on your system (duplicating dependencies for no good reason)
and
b) don't integrate into the system theming properly (so end up looking different to everything else)

Here's how to get it as a .deb, and set the theme to match the rest of the system.

Open a terminal and run:
Code: [Select]
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:peppermintos/gimp-2.10.2
then
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get update
then
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install gimp gimp-plugin-registry gmic gegl
you should now find GIMP 2.10.2 in your menu at:-

Menu > Graphics > GIMP Image Editor

By default, GIMP 2.10.2 opens with its own dark theme, but if you want it to use the same theme as the rest of your system, open GIMP then navigate to:-

Edit > Preferences > Interface > Theme

and set it to "System".

To UNDO

To remove GIMP 2.10.2 and go back to version 2.8, run these 2 commands
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install ppa-purge
then
Code: [Select]
sudo ppa-purge ppa:peppermintos/gimp-2.10.2

We've done it this way rather than just replacing 2.8 in the main repos so you have a choice between 2.8 and 2.10 .. take your pick ;)
