I have read that the city of Rome has done the same. All the employees are free to choose between LibreOffice and Word right now, but LibreOffice will be the future there. The systems are running on Linux (openSUSE, if I am right). Smart!

More than adopting libreoffice on their desktop computers,   they need to provide public services that works with open source software (I don't know if that's the case in Barcelona).

Maybe the press are too busy concentrating on another kind of cession/break away at the moment ?

It certainly looks like they're going about this the right way and hopefully they've learned from the stupidity of the Munich team and not roll their own distro

I honestly never understood the rationale behind that decision, it completely negated the real strength of LInux and cost them a lot of money and work they could have had for free by running stock Ubuntu or some derivitive, I'm sure they won't be running their own modified version of Windows

If this is the success I hope it will be it could encourage other municipal authorities around the world to follow suit or at least get them thinking about free software and I'm sure many will be watching how this goes in Barcelona

Uuuh, yes, you are right. I have dropped a clanger.  ;)

My intention was to show that some big cities are smart enough to use Linux. They would be even smarter if they would use Peppermint, I guess. :)
