I need Silverlight to listen and participate in an online class. The Silverlight web page forces me to go to Monolight but it is not intuitive to me. I can't figure out what to download. Please help

What you'll likely need to do is install a plugin called Pipelight and enable Silverlight functionality with it. From there I would install Firefox to use with it:

Code: [Select]
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:pipelight/stable
apt update
apt install --install-recommends pipelight-multi
sudo pipelight-plugin --update
sudo pipelight-plugin --enable silverlight
apt install firefox

From here I would install a Firefox extension that allows you to switch the user agent. There are several of these and pretty much all of them allow you to use a Windows user agent string. Once done and the user agent is set, you should be able to access Silverlight content within Firefox.

Note that Pipelight, and thus Pipelight's version of Silverlight, require something called the "Netscape Plugin API" (NPAPI for short) which current versions of Chrome and Chromium no longer support, this is why Firefox is recommended for this.

I did all the steps that you recommended and tested it this morning. It still does not allow me to participate in the class. I looked in my software manager for the NPAPI and it is checked off which means I have it downloaded already
any other suggestions?
Thanks again
Susan

Silverlight won't work in WINE.

Is there any way you can post a link to one of these classes .. or do you need t be logged on ?

I've just finished getting Pipelight working on Peppermint os5 myself.

The terminal instructions Kendall gave are correct so make sure to follow those first.

After that, you need to download the "User Agent Overrider 0.2.4" extension add-on in Firefox.  Then set the user agent to Windows/Firefox 29.

This worked for me and have now got Netflix up and running in Firefox. ;-)

When you switch/override your browser's UA, it tricks web servers into thinking you're using a different web browser (or device) than you actually are.

There are all sorts of reasons for doing this -- for instance, making your Chromium browser appear to be an iPhone, so you can see what a web site looks like on a mobile device... or whatevs.

First time I remember doing this trick was wayback in the "browser war" days.  Some web sites were setup so you could only view them with a Netscape browser.  If you were using anything else, all you would see is a message that hurled a few insults at you, and tell you to switch to Netscape, if you wanted to get on their web site.  By switching/overriding your UA to mimic a Netscape browser, you could make the web server *think* you were using Netscape, even though you weren't, and the web site could be viewed, e.g. it would serve the site to you, instead of blocking you.

Make Sense?

Hi all,

Let me first say that I'm impressed by the great help that is being given by so many friendly participants in this forum! That cannot be said for all linux forums that are on the internet! ;D

My issue is following: I executed all instructions, but Silverlight doesn't show up! I have to admit that it has been a year ago that this was instructed, and now I am using Firefox 39.0, so that might be the cause of it.

I tried the Silverlight test site http://bubblemark.com/silverlight2.html, but this resulted in the well known blue picture that recommends to install Microsoft Silverlight. Also I noticed that nothing is added into the plugin list as well, so that explains that Firefox cannot display Silverlight.

Is there any solution for this, or do you recommend to downgrade Firefox to e.g. version 29, according to the settings of the "User Agent Overrider 0.2.4" extension add-on?

Thank you all for reading and helping to find a solution!

paulus

Hi paulus, and welcome to the forum :)

I'll see if I can test this myself later and post back, and in answer to your question NO you shouldn't need to downgrade to FF29, it's just that the user agent switcher needed to "report" that's what version you were running, it also needed to report you were running it in Windows..

But can I ask why you need Silverlight ? .. even Microsoft are ditching it.

and have you got a specific site in mind that we can test any solution against ?
