java JRE and JDK
« on: July 11, 2014, 05:57:04 pm »
Hi, I have just installed Peppermint 5 on an old laptop and I want to use it with Eclipse to do a java course. I'm completely new to Linux so I'm not sure how to install the JRE and JDK. On the java website I have a choice between an archive file or a RPM file - which do I need to use with Peppermint?

Thanks

Nick

If you want the openjava JRE (runtime environment and browser plugin:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt install default-jre icedtea-7-plugin
if you also want the openjava JDK:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt install default-jdk

If on the other hand you want Oracle Java 8 .. see here:

Thanks for the reply - not entirely sure which I need but I've got somewhere to start looking now. As a newbie I hadn't heard of PPA's before but looks like a good idea.

Thanks again

Nick
