You've got a 64-bit machine so I'd stick with 64-bit unless you encounter problems after installation.

I think your network card driver could be fixed from a live session after installation if required, there was no need to try to reinstall for that reason.

Here's a question which may simplify things:
Do you want to use your whole 112GB drive for Peppermint? There's nothing on there you need to keep, is there?

So Windows on the first drive doesn't work either ?

Which drive is set as the first boot device in the BIOS ?

Oh and YES, Linux will boot if every partition is in an extended partition .. GRUB doesn't care, but the Windows bootloader does.

I rather keep some of the drive as don't you have to keep some memory to run oracle virtual box?  If there is another way please let me know.  thanks!

So Windows on the first drive doesn't work either ?

Windows doesn't work but i have many files that i can't delete from that drive.

Which drive is set as the first boot device in the BIOS ?

The one windows is on is first boot but again, out of 3 times installing this morning i had switched first boot to the 112 GB drive and i loaded the distro after installing but just didn't recognize my NIC card so i had to try it again.  I had many distros installed on computer before without any problems.

Oh and YES, Linux will boot if every partition is in an extended partition .. GRUB doesn't care, but the Windows bootloader does.
As for the windows OS, i tried the windows disk in the system and it said it couldn't be fixed like they wanted me to throw away a perfectly fine drive!  I have noticed with running dvd drives in this desktop with windows, the dvds come out at least 4x to 5x hotter than when you accomplish the same task with Emmabuntus XFCE!  Same thing happens with the cpu and fan running 10x faster and longer than using a linux distro!  If i had someone to back my findings, i would sue microsoft for damages!

Yes, I suggest you

1) select "Erase disk and install Peppermint OS 8"

2) MAKE SURE to select your 112GB drive from the dropdown menu on the following screen, similar to this:

3) If asked which device to install the bootloader to, again be sure to select the 112GB drive

This should automatically give you a bootable system. If your networking doesn't work, DON'T PANIC - come back here and ask for help with it. When you want to make room for virtual OSes you can then

4) Boot into your Live USB session and use GParted to shrink the Peppermint partition.

I'm afraid the Windows salvage might be beyond the scope of this forum though - which is not to say that it's going to be impossible; I've no idea.

Was Windows working before you installed Linux ?

you're making this topic nearly impossible for me to follow, right now I have no idea which drives are in the PC, which is the primary boot device, which disk has windows on it, whether Peppermint is on a drive at all and if so which one and which architecture of Peppermint ?

The problem is you keep moving the target so I'd find it very hard to help you.

Please put BOTH drives back in the PC .. Set the NON Windows disk as the primary boot device .. then boot to a LiveUSB/LiveCD and post the output from:
Code: [Select]
sudo fdisk -l
so we can get a picture of your current partition layout.

yes i can erase the disk and start over but when you select this disk under something else tick, it starts asking you for partitioning for / root and others etc like it can't do it by itself and that is even with telling it where to load boot.  The menus for some of this is lacking because it should just recognize the other disk you want and start installing instead of asking you make your own partitions.

Mark,
I am using the 112 gb hard drive sdb for the installation and i do have this disk selected as primary.  I really don't understand why such a minimalistic distro is giving so much trouble loading when all these other flavors of both ubuntu, fedora, debian, manjaro installed fine to both drives.  Tell me exactly what type partitions and setup for each i need to do if you see i did anything wrong.  All partitions i made were all ext4 except Swap partition.  Thanks!
Yy

Hi awweeks1,

When in a situation like this it might be best to use the MSI utility ( supposing it has one) and completely reset the Laptop back to factory defaults. This will definitely remove any programs and or data you have on the disk.

When you have then got Windows fully working, you can start again installing Peppermint.

I would not wait until Peppermint is installed as the Factory reset may well wipe it out.

Regards Zeb...

ps I have no idea what this program is called in MSI laptops or how you call it up if you can't get into windows. Some allow access to it via a function key during initial boot up.  You will have to research this yourself.

Please tell me what the MSI utility is and how i would use it?  I have tried everything with the windows 2 TB shown above.  This was a drive that was shrinked to try putting peppermint 8 Respin beside it.

As stated above - I do not have an MSI laptop - I have never had one - I do not know if they even include such a program with their laptops - I just know other Laptop manufacturers do - Sorry - can't help further. You will have to google it.

Regards Zeb...

quick google search try this - no guarantees this applies to your particular laptop though https://www.msi.com/pic/faq/10015490@2015-0817-0741-080040@faq_0000000001774_en.pdf

Hello all!  I have Peppermint 8 Respin working on the 112 gb hard drive but would like to keep this ticket open before saying it has totally installed and operated correctly.

I did have to make / (root), /home, /swap and /boot partitions on it.  Every partition except /Swap was formatted to Ext4 and had to use the "Something else" tick on the installation menu.

I have concerns to why if you select "Something Else," you don't have the option to just select the whole erase drive, point the boot option to that drive, and just let the installation flow as if you were selecting it to be automatically done.  The way it is current set is like you are being punished for selecting "Something Else."

There was a slight problem with it though, i had to use a distro installed live to a USB drive called  "Boot Repair Disk 64" which can be found at  https://sourceforge.net/projects/boot-repair-cd/files/
When you live boot a usb, the distro asks for only the language you use and then upon entering the distro it prompts a box to either do advanced or the "Recommended fix,' so what worked for my problem was running the "Recommended fix."

I know this was a little hard process to get working but shouldn't the distro be programmed for people migrating from any Windows OS  to Peppermint with easy menus?

Below i will show all items you all asked for to research my issue to make it easier for others going forward.  Thanks for your help and i will be back after putting distro through the testing stage!

Peppermint uses the standard Ubuntu ubiquity installer, to suggest it somehow behaves differently to Ubuntu is at best incorrect and at worst misleading.

It is perfectly normal for "Something Else" to ask you to create partitions manually, in fact the entire purpose of "Something Else" is an advanced mode to remove the automation and allow you to manually choose your partitioning scheme, where to mount those partitions, and where to put the bootloader .. if you want an automated install don't choose "Something Else", the installer DID offer to "User the entire disk" which would have done everything for you.

Ubuntu/Lubuntu/Xubuntu/Kubuntu/Mint/Elementary/LXLE/Linux Lite/the list goes on, would have behaved exactly the same way because they too us the standard Ubiquity installer .. so this was either PEBKAC or a messed up partitioning scheme that Ubiquity couldn't figure out, it was NOT a Peppermint specific issue.

yes i can erase the disk and start over but when you select this disk under something else tick....

This was why I advised you to use the simple option. You chose to do "something else" several times and made a dog's breakfast of it. There's a reason why there's a simple option right at the top.
