P 8 not showing grub or starting after install
« on: December 13, 2017, 10:39:59 pm »
Here is a pastebin file from boot repair disc after installing with installation updates and codecs(both ticks checked after selecting language):

Ubuntu Pastebin

Paste from boot-repair at Thu, 14 Dec 2017 02:24:51 +0000

Boot Info Script 8f991e4 + Boot-Repair extra info      [Boot-Info 25oct2017]

Please let me know what of the pastebin i need to provide to see why i can't use the distro.  The file exceeded 3000 characters or i would have pasted in entirety!

Maybe these hyperlinks will let you all see what is going on.

http://paste.ubuntu.com/26180499/

http://paste.ubuntu.com/26180725/

second hyperlink is after trying to install grub to sda3 i believe.  Thanks if someone can help see what is happening.  I am self taught of linux and still need to learn alot.

Did you notice this at the very bottom?

Quote
The boot files of [Peppermint 8 Eight] are far from the start of the disk. Your BIOS may not detect them. You may want to retry after creating a /boot partition (EXT4, >200MB, start of the disk). This can be performed via tools such as gParted. Then select this partition via the [Separate /boot partition:] option of [Boot Repair]. (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootPartition)

I'd advise against trying to do that just yet. It would mean messing around with your Windows partition.

Which drive have you set it to boot from in BIOS?

What happens when you try to boot from sda or sdb?

Did you see i tried from sda3 and i think sda5?

I had installed earlier to the hard drive that was 120 Gbs and it does the same thing.

Is this respin 8 just for uefi and secure boot only?  Reason i ask is i have no options of switch both on or off.  This is an old system.

I am trying to follow the English Bob series to learn Peppermint where i can finally game through steam and i like how the distro is setup.  If forced to use only the earlier Pepp 8 can i still get some of the new features to the Pepp 8 earlier version?  I like the menu setup for online apps which would be great to have.  Thanks!

How would i boot from the ones you mentioned?

If Peppermint 8 is working for you then there is no need to update to the respin. English Bob's tutorials will work the same on Pep 8 and the respin.   What you should be asking is will your old system be good enough to run games on...

There will - once it has been tested and proven - hopefully be an upgrade path users can follow.

Okay I'm lost here, so which of the above 2 pastebins is the current configuration ?

And can you boot to the LiveUSB and post the output from:
Code: [Select]
sudo fdisk -l

Are you saying that Peppermint 8 installed and worked, but the respin doesn't ?

No, it should work on legacy/BIOS boot systems.

I just mean your first and second hard drives. Normally you would either go into the BIOS and set the boot order, or press a function key during boot to choose a boot drive.

So what exactly happens when you try to boot from the internal hard drives?

I think what murraymint is saying is that your first output suggests GRUB stage one was loaded to the master boot record of your SECOND hard drive.

So unless you make this the primary boot device, it will never get enacted.

I am going to try loading it to the second drive and make the boot partition before the /root partition and change boot drives to the second disk.  I was able to run pep respin from usb drive that i installed it from.  If it doesn't load again, i will try your code.  What does it do?  thanks all for helping!

It just lists the partitions .. it won't fix anything but it'll give us an idea where to start.

Whilst you're at it, can you also post the output from:
Code: [Select]
inxi -Fz

Does it even work to have a /boot partition within an extended partition? Anyone know?  :-\

For repairing Windows you're probably going to need your Windows installation disc and look for a guide such as this:

Above is the drive i tried installing pepp 8 respin for 3 times today.

Following were setup and formatted every time i tried installing:

sdb2 was made for /boot
sdb5 was where i originally each time said to place the /boot on
sdb6 was made for /root
sdb7  swap
sdb8  was made for  /home

This is the 2nd hard drive and i did each time switch the 2nd for primary drive through my BIOS settings

First installation try today was done without installing updates and 3rd party software with the /boot the way you are asking and it installed the system but when i went to get updates, pep 8 respin would not see my NIC card so tried 2 more times and nothing.  Every thing else seemed to work fine on the first installation  previously mentioned.

With my specs given, would it be better for me to run 32 bit or the 64 bit OS.
