Problem installing peppermint8 to new laptop [SOLVED]
« on: December 13, 2017, 01:24:37 am »
I picked up a new msi  gs63060 laptop.  It was a spur of the moment purchase that I let the damn salesman talk me into.  I am really starting to think I made a mistake.  I have been having problems trying to install Peppermint.  I figured since this is newer than anything I have ever owned I should go with Peppermint 8.   When trying to install the computer boots up to the grub menu.  I choose to install peppermint and it brings up the Peppermint logo and the progress bar goes good to maybe about 20% or so complete and then freezes.  I have redownloaded and redid the flashdrive with unetbootin several times.  The last time I even used windows and rufus on the new computer and still had the same result.  I then figured I would try my Peppermint 6 usb from previous installations.  All was going well.  It made it all the way into the installation screens but would not see that it was connected to the internet so I did not go any further.  I have it hooked up with an ethernet connection directly to the modem.  I know all of the connections and signal were good though because when I had the computer running in windows everything was working .   I have seen questions in other peoples posts on here about different things like uefi vs legacy which I did come across in the bios menu when setting up the boot order but I honestly do not know anything about that.  Before this one the newest computer I had played with was originally windows vista, however old that is.  Sorry I dont have much more information to give.

Hi adamunderwood,

What happens if you use the try before you install option ?  (or however it's worded - just not straight to installation)

How far does it get using that option?

If you do get to a desktop - can you post the terminal output from the following command

Code: [Select]
inxi -Fz

Hi Zeb, when I choose to try Peppermint instead of install, it has the same result.  Brings up the logo, underneath that it says Starting Up..., and the progress bar goes maybe 3/8 of an inch and then freezes.  I never can get to a terminal to try that command.

Also, I just tried what PCNetSpec suggested regarding the quiet splash in this thread
https://forum.peppermintos.com/index.php/topic,6076.15.html

It proceeds through a bunch of processes and then goes to a blank screen with the following:
Code: [Select]
Peppermint Eight peppermint tty1

peppermint  login:

It does not accept any login and password I try.

OK

Trying what PCNetSpec said ignore the rootdelay and add nomodeset instead so it now ends with

nomodeset --

See if that gets you any further

Hi adamunderwood,

Yes, give it a go and if it stalls on boot again - use nomodeset to get it to a desktop

One installed you should be able to install nvidia drivers which should negate the need for future use of nomodeset

Good Luck  :)

Thanks for the help, so far it is working.  So with this computer do you recommend me to use Logical Volume Management or no?

Good to hear  :)

That's your own personal choice. I have never used it so am not in a position to recommend or not - sorry.

Well it appears that the install worked.
Thank you very much for your help.

So is it a major pain to explain what you think my problem was?

Hi

I am glad it worked but I am not technical enough to explain why it just didn't work.    New motherboard - new graphics card - dual graphics card as I saw you had intel graphics too??

All I know is the tips n tricks I have learnt whilst on the Forums.

Hopefully someone more technical will come along with a "possible" answer  :)
