Where is Peppermint's "About" screen?
« on: December 09, 2017, 05:07:44 pm »
This is something that strikes me as odd. I try to find out which version I'm running ( 7 or 8 ) and I don't find anything in the start menu.

Where is your big, proud "This is Peppermint Version X"?

Microsoft used to put that information right in the start menu (though they seem to have stopped doing that).

There are a number of methods you can use to find out what version you're using.  One is to simply run this in a terminal:

Code: [Select]
inxi -F

That will give you all kinds of info about your system, including what OS you're using.

Another is to simply hit the "logout" thing in the menu:

There are other ways you can find out, but those are a couple of simple ones.  I don't think there's an "about" page in Peppermint.

But Peppermint version X isn't out yet , we're only at version VIII :))

And we're not Microsoft.

Where is Peppermint's "About" screen?

It's on Peppermint's default start page.  You click on peppermint home > about

Oh, here's the page.;)

And we're not Microsoft.

That was going to be my first response, but I decided to leave that for you and to show a couple easy ways to know your version number.  ;)

Programs like hardinfo (the exact name in the repositories) would be one of the closest things to what Microsoft has, in that it will give you all of the info about your system.  However, not everyone will use it and it's simple to install, so there was no good reason to have it by default.  Also, including it would violate the Peppermint ethos of installing only the bare essentials and letting the end user decide what else should be installed.  To install hardinfo, just run this command in a terminal:

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install hardinfo

To me you are like the Microsoft.

(It's a compliment  :D)

Thanks dudes, so there are ways to do this, but as often in Unix, they could be more obvious.

Oh and no, the website doesn't cut it, I want to know about _my machine_.

Sorry my mate but Peppermint isn't in the habit of including unnecessary 'stuff' .. it would be trivial to write something to display which version of Peppermint you are using, but I'd expect the vast majority will know, and only a tiny percentage of those that don't would care enough to require an 'app' for it.

And we won't load everyone's system with something most won't need .. it's contrary to the Peppermint ethos ;)

And I'd have thought that peppermint-logout telling you every time it's run would be enough for most ;)

No, I naively thought this thread had veered off course early on.  I thought if scifidude79 and The Poor Guy had not answered the questions correctly with the inxi -Fz or lsb_release -a commands, then stefanreich must have been referring to Peppermint's very own About page.

I now see I was wrong about About! ;D
