Nvenc / Obs-Studio not working [SOLVED]
« on: December 09, 2017, 07:16:22 am »
Hi

I had a problem with nvenc - suddenly not working with obs-studio - so

I purged nvidia, nvenc and obs-studio and hwe-edge right back to basics.

I installed Nvidia drivers so I am on 384.90

I installed Nvenc vis this method >> http://dan.bodar.com/2016/06/07/rebuilding-ffmpeg-with-nvenc-and-aac-on-ubuntu/

Which has always worked before

and still OBS refuses to see nvenc.

It was working all perfectly well....  so no idea what has gone wrong.   I really don't want to do a "Fresh" install of the OS but will do if needed
Regards
Zeb...

Does it work with the 4.10.0-40 kernel ?

If not, you're probably going to need to go back through your apt logs and see if something got installed/updated that may have broken it.

Hi

No, as that is what I am on now.

It was working on the HWE-edge kernel, which is what I was on. ie 4.13 something

and then it wasn't and I have no idea what I did to make it stop working. I just got up this morning and BANG!

It's obviously the "getting up" that's at fault then .. go back to bed :)

Did you change any settings in OBS ?

Dunno how much help I can be here, I know absolutely nothing about OBS .. is there any way to test nvenc elsewhere (so we can rule in/out OBS itself ?

[EDIT]

And when you reinstalled OBS, did you clean out anything from your home folder .. I mean does it save anything in there ?

restricted extras messing with libavcodec-ffmpeg56:amd64 (7:2.8.11-0ubuntu0.16.04.1) - I bet that did it.

I am going to uninstall the restricted extras and see if re-applying the script helps.....  else I will re-install

Yes that looks promising as a possible culprit.

[EDIT]

You may need to recompile ffmpeg (as per your link) after adding libavcodec-ffmpeg56 back.

[EDIT2]

And if it turns out to be the culprit, please give me advanced warning of the EB roast .. I'll bring the drinks :))

I think mine went wrong as I added the Restricted extras - after I got nvenc working.

As and when I eventually do a rebuild ( the day will come) I will install the extras first and see if that still causes a problem
