Bypass Login Screen Pep8 <SOLVED!>
« on: December 05, 2017, 02:25:46 pm »
I upgraded a netbook and a ChromeBox from 7 to 8 and in my haste, set a password login for the Chromebox (which I don't want...it's a front room media box).

In any case, I was able to not ask for a password from  Users and Groups, but it still stops at the login screen.  How do I get this back to autologin without a pause on the login screen here in Pep 8? My LightDm file is "/etc/lightdm/lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf" and not just lightdm.conf and doesn't include any login true false statements.

Do I need to create new, mod the other or do something else?

Run:
Code: [Select]
sudo xed /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf
when it opens, you'll see a line like:-
Code: [Select]
autologin-user=
now let's say you want to autologin to the 'mark' account .. you'd make that line read
Code: [Select]
autologin-user=mark
and SAVE the file.

Then reboot to test.

As I said in the initial post, I don't have a lightdm.conf file. So I created it with the command you have above (which just opened a blank text file)
Code: [Select]
sudo xed /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf

added the autologin line, saved it and then to see what would happen, restarted.

As expected, without the rest of the usual code, it now freezes as it tries to load Peppermint.

That leaves me in a dilemma about how to undo those changes since I'm now effectively locked out. It took four hours to load it with Steam configurations, Kodi reverts and libraries, a custom Chrome and IR remote codes after doing a clean install of 8. I would like to avoid a repeat of that.

Thoughts?

OK...used rm from the command prompt to kill off the faulty lightdm file and it let me back in to where it was before.

Where from here to punt the login screen?

Assuming your system account name is sandmanut

Run:
Code: [Select]
sudo xed /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf
and make it read
Code: [Select]
[Seat:*]
autologin-guest=false
autologin-user-timeout=0
autologin-user=sandmanut
SAVE the file and exit the text editor.

Reboot to test.

That did the trick! Thank you!

I'll add one note for those that may find this via search at a future point ::: Although  my username started with a cap (uppercase), this method doesn't work if I input the user as it exists at the login. Go all lowercase with the username and that works.

Yeah basically it needs to be the same as the output from:
Code: [Select]
whoami

and you're most welcome SandmanUT :)
