Not now, after performing this most recent fresh install it did work and then after running the first software update , after running sudo apt update and sudo apt upgrade, clicking on the update shield, I chose to include the upgraded grub config files and it reverted back to the small fonts and won't change. So the original grub config file is the one that worked.
What was I thinking?

What's the output from:
Code: [Select]
cat /etc/default/grub | grep GFX

So wasn't the fix to change this line
Code: [Select]
#GRUB_GFXMODE=800x600
and run 'sudo update-grub' ?

But you haven't uncommented it by removing the "'#" .. so it won't be acted upon.
(in a bash script or config file, any line that begins with a "#" is treated as a comment and ignored .. it's so you can add human readable comments to your scripts to help you uncerstand them when you revisit them after some time)

remove the #

and run:
Code: [Select]
sudo update-grub

Aha! Well now I know, it only took me two and a half years to learn something. Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks? Thank you PCNetSpec, that's all it needed. Until the next time.  :-[  :)

Okay, I'm going to guess that my hard drive is going out, P 8 acting up again and trying to recover as before isn't working. Tried to install P 8 respin and on startup I get the kernel panic message. I think in one of the other posts the writer mentioned that he/she was getting the same and then started getting faulty hard drive type messages. Fortunately I can still log into either of the other two distros on this hard drive, sda1 appears to be having all the problems. Time to find another
hard drive!  >:(

So just for kicks I reinstalled P 8 respin and this time it worked. That was yesterday and today I'm still good. We'll see how long this lasts. A replacement hdd is on it's way, no ssd though.
