Okay, your Peppermint package versions such as "peppermint-default-settings ( 5.0.8 )", and "trusty" apt entries STRONGLY suggest you're on Peppermint 5 which **IS** still supported.

but as your system seems quite broken, a lot of the Peppermint configs have somehow become overwritten (probably with Ubuntu defaults)

So as you sound like you were considering it anyway, I'd say YES probably a good time to move to a more current version ;)

We could **possibly** fix your Peppermint 5 installation, but there's always a risk of making things worse .. so if I were you I'd copy off any user files you need to keep, then take this opportunity to install a newer version .. but your call.

All additions and updates were done via the notices for update that I constantly get.  I only download the grade 5, 4 & 3 update packages.

Would you recommend updating my version and to which one?
Thanks for all your time!

And yet your lsb-release suggests you're on 16.04 :-\

Just to check, can you post the output from:
Code: [Select]
cat /etc/apt/sources.list.d/peppermint.list
and
Code: [Select]
inxi -Fz

Okay somehow your peppermint PPA has become deactivated.

We could reactivate it, but there's no guarantee it would reinstall the  proper peppermint packages because the Ubuntu ones have higher version numbers now.

I'm going to assume at some point the Update Manager offered to dist-upgrade you to Ubuntu 16.04 .. you should not have accepted that.

Your system spec should support Peppermint 8 .. but with a single core processor I don't know how well flash will perform (or even if it will at all).

What version would you recommend for a casual user?  :)

Your system spec should support Peppermint 8 64bit .. but with a single core processor I don't know how well flash will perform.

So how important is flash to you ?

[EDIT]

Why not test it on a LiveUSB first ;)

I went ahead and installed Peppermint 8.  It seems unstable.  I have had it totally crash once already.  Been using it one hour.  :'(

Have you run a full system update ?

Don't know what that means.  I downloaded the iso file for PP8 and told it to install.  Worked like crap.  I then downloaded PP7 and tried that.  Not much better.  Tried to change the wallpaper and it took 3.5 minutes just to open the dialog box.

Seems like I need to do a full hard drive format then inatall.??  Don't know how to do that.  :'(

Not sure.  It's been years since I used Linux before I installed Peppermint 4 or 5.  I used to have to manually lay out all the partitions then.  I just went more or less with the flow this round.

Other than the 3.5 minute to open wallpaper thing, I'm finding most things seem to be working - on ver. 7.

As I now know what version of Peppermint I'm running - ;D - I should close this thread and thank everyone for their help.

I'll open an new thread as soon as I know enough about P7 to ask intelligent questions,  :)

Might be worth clearing the folders i the wallpapper manager and seeing if it still takes ages to open when it's not actually looking in any folders.

If it then opens quickly, ry re-adding the

/usr/share/peppermint/wallpapers

directory back to the wallpaper manager.

This is just a test to see if the problem isn't so much with loading the wallpaper manager, more an issue with it scanning the default directory for images.
