I am a newbie with very little experience with Linux and would like to know how I can securely do online banking/online shopping on peppermintos?

Hi Andy, welcome to Peppermint. I haven't had any problems with online banking as long as the sites I'm giving my info to have the the "lock" icon in front of their address. I'm interested to see what the experts have to say about this.  :)
What was I thinking?

yeah I'd say is long as the site is https (ie. has the green lock symbol in the address bar) you should be fine.

But if you're really paranoid, use a non-persistent LiveUSB to do your banking.

The exact same way you do it in Windows and OSX.  Like everyone else said, it's all about website security.  I do banking and shopping all the time in Peppermint and I've never had an issue, because I make sure I'm on secure sites before doing anything.
