How to Resize Font Size in Grub Menu-Reopened(SOLVED)
« on: November 04, 2017, 11:32:33 am »
Hello Peppermint people. I have a new problem that popped up when I connected a new smart tv as a second monitor. My grub menu screen font size changed to something so small I can barely read it. The resolution sizes of both monitors are set at 1024x768. How can I reset the font size so that I can easily read the grub menu? Thanks guys.  :-\

Is the change still applied to the grub file ?

If so, does running:
Code: [Select]
sudo update-grub
fix things ?

Hi PCNetSpec, yes the changes are still in the default/grub file and no running sudo update-grub does not fix it. I was looking at Grub Customizer under appearances and there is a possibility to change to a custom resolution size. Without the box ticked, it does show a resolution of 1440x900 which is strange because in the grub menu there is a box in the middle suggesting to optimize to that size.  I am tempted to tick the box and change that to 1024x768 but the same screen also has a place for a background image and is asking to sellect an image. So I don't do anything because I'm not confident with what I might do. Does that make sense? Should I try changing the resolution size there and just ignore the request for a background image? One other thing, this all started with the addition of the second monitor which has a resolution of 1920x1080.

Just to test what's going on, I disconnected the second monitor this morning before starting up the computer and the grub menu screen went back to normal. I don't want to have to disconnect and reconnect the second monitor all the time so I would really like to solve this problem. Thanks

I went ahead and changed the resolution size in Grub Customizer to 800x600, did not do a sudo update-grub and rebooted. This worked and is a good size. I'll wait till tomorrow and if it's holding, I'll mark this as solved, again.

Weird .. it shouldn't make a difference without an "update-grub" because that file only influences the building of the grub.cfg file, it's not part of the grub bootloader itself :-\

[EDIT]

I can only assume grub customiser automatically runs an update-grub

Hi PCNetSpec,

Before I got stung several times by grub customizer, I recall exactly what you assume: in other words, I'm quite sure that it does automaticaly run update-grub.

I now never use grub customizer and advise others to learn how to modify their grub configurations manually (it really is not so difficult to learn) so if anything goes wrong you at least know where to start looking for the mistake rather than having to dig through grub customizer's scripts.  ;)

Good advice, I always feel safer doing things myself .. at least I understand what changes I make so reverting them is easy.

It does appear that Grub Customizer has my grub config files well in hand. Funny thing is I don't remember ever installing it. I first looked for Grub Customizer when I couldn't get Peppermint 8 at the top of the grub menu list and it was already installed. But everything is working good now, so I'll leave things alone. And I will mark this thread as solved since it is working. Thanks guys  :)

Heh!  Grub Customizer.

In my experience, it'll do some great things. But, like any 'power tool' you need to be careful how you use it or, as Slim.Fatz put it, you'll get stung.

For instance, I used Grub Customizer to have openSUSE Tumbleweed handle the Grub on this machine. I actually boot Peppermint through Tumbleweed. And, when I update Peppermint's Grub - install a new kernel, or whatevs - the changes don't take effect until I update the Grub in openSUSE Tumbleweed.

I doubt there is 1 in a million users that could figure out how to boot this machine. No kidding.

Now, if a user did this accidentally using Grub Customizer, I judge it would be lights out for them - hence, one of the dangers of using it.

Caveat emptor...
