Sorry, but I don't know how to do either one of those things.  Little out of my league here.

Boot to the Peppermint LiveCD/LiveUSB .. when you get to the screen where it offers you "Try Peppermint" and "Install Peppermint" ..  hit the "Tab" key

You'll then see some white writing at the bottom of screen that ends with

quiet splash --

Replace 'quiet splash' with 'rootdelay=10' .. so it now ends with

rootdelay=10 --

then hit enter to continue booting.

Thanks for your help!  Something else I noticed--- the problem seems to have something to do with Ubuntu 16.04.  When I try to use Lubuntu 16.04 or Xubuntu 16.04, I get the same problem.  I didn't get it with my Lubuntu install because I used 17.04 without realizing it.  Not sure if that helps.

I'll try your suggestions when i get home tonight.

Thanks!

Jim

Yeah might be a combination of something in your BIOS and a kernel regression in the 4.4/4.8 kernels, that's been fixed in the 4.9 kernel as used in the 17.04 ISO

If that's the case, the Peppermint 8 respin when released should also hopefully be fine as that ISO will have a >=4.10 kernel series.

Have you got another PC you could attach the SSD to, install Peppermint, run a full system update (which will pull in the 4.10 kernel), then move the SSD back to this machine ?

Yes, i think I could do that--- great idea!  Just to make  sure, how do i run a full system update?  "sudo apt-get update", "sudo apt-get upgrade" or "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade"?  Or maybe something else?

Thanks!

Full system update would be (with an active internet connection)
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get update
then
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
then reboot and check you're now on the 4.10 kernel with
Code: [Select]
uname -a
