Well there's something wrong with that port then because as Zeb suggests USB 3.0 ports should be fully backwards compatible with USB 1.0/1.1/2.0 devices.

There may be a BIOS setting that disables USB 3.0 ports (?)

I did try to look in the BIOS settings but it's password protected and I don't know the password, I bought this PC off ebay some time ago and only discovered the BIOS had a password when I tried to see if USB3 was turned off

i was thinking about buying the Apacer, but it looked like it might be a gray market item, here in the States.

Personally, I wouldn't worry about it. Probably won't make any difference in read/write speeds with a 5400 RPM spinner.

If you took it apart and installed a Sammy SSD, then yeah... maybe. But, hell, a 1TB SSD will set you back a small fortune  ;)
