I had the same problem with this machine, when I first built it. The drivers in the Ubu repos were stale - probably still are.

Don't know which drivers you are using, but ver 384.90 is currently working perfectly on my box.

I got them here: http://ppa.launchpad.net/graphics-drivers/ppa/ubuntu

Specifically: http://ppa.launchpad.net/graphics-drivers/ppa/ubuntu/pool/main/n/nvidia-graphics-drivers-384/

@VinDSL

Can I ask which card(s) you have in your machine ?
(or even better, your "inxi -G" output please)

I only ask because the drivers from that repo caused me all sorts of problems .. but it may just be my setup.

When I switched to the drivers from that PPA my PC kept freezing for about 4 seconds every minute or so .. when I purged the PPA and went back to the ones from the main repos it still kept freezing ??? .. so I'm now stuck on the Intel card.

I'm not massively bothered and could probably find a solution, but I never really need the power of the nVidia card anyway so I haven't bothered.

Spoiler (click here to view / hide)
╭─vindsl@Boogaloo-5 ~
╰─➤  inxi -G
Graphics:  Card: NVIDIA GK208 [GeForce GT 710B]
Display Server: X.Org 1.19.3 drivers: nvidia (unloaded: fbdev, vesa, nouveau)
           Resolution: 1280x1024@60.02hz, 1280x1024@60.02hz, 2560x1080@60.00hz
           GLX Renderer: GeForce GT 710/PCIe/SSE2
           GLX Version: 4.5.0 NVIDIA 384.90
[close]

It's a low-end card, but uses a new generation GPU.

Quote
Coming to the specifications, NVIDIA’s GeForce GT 710 is based on the older Kepler architecture. It uses the GK208 graphics core which is a revised version of the GK108 graphics core and has 192 CUDA cores in total which means only 1 SMX is found on the graphics chip (Kepler has 192 CC per SM compared to 128 CC per SM on Maxwell). The chip is clocked at 954 MHz though that may differ with AIB specific models. The card pack up to 2 GB of DDR3 memory that is clocked at 1.8 Gbps and runs along a 64-bit bus interface. The card pumps out a bandwidth of 14.4 GB/s. The GeForce GT 710 is a low end graphics card and maintains a 19W TDP. Display outputs include HDMI, Dual Link DVI-D and VGA ports. The card will be available in several form factors that include single slot, single slot (low-profile) and dual-slot models.

I needed something that would support 3 monitors, but work with the puny 240W power supply in my Dell 7010 SFF, without burning it out.

The drivers in the repo would only work for a few seconds or few minutes before hard-locking/freezing my Dell.

Haven't had a prob since switching to the latest & greatest ver.  ;)

Ah, it's okay I thought you were talking about your Dell lappy.

This E6530 has both an NVIDIA GF108GLM [NVS 5200M] and the on chip Intel HD 4000

Oh, okay.

I'm not comfortable with nVidia chipsets in Dell lappys, since they had that solder underflow problem, a few years ago.

Probably alright now, but...

I was given a good laptop to use and I found out the nvidia drivers made it freeze up.  The laptop would have this mysterious popping sound too.  It works great without NVIDIA drivers I think it was for the 9xxx series.  Dell does not even have replacement parts for my Vostro laptop either.  So no playing 3d hardware acceleration stuff for me.  It is okay it plays media just fine.
