Trouble booting my old iMac
« on: September 29, 2017, 08:10:42 am »
I've enjoyed using Peppermint (7 and now 8 ) on a early 2006 32-bit Intel Core Duo iMac (https://everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/specs/imac_cd_2.0_20.html) since the start of the year.  After a software update about a month ago I a booting problem developed.  Apologies if this issue is covered elsewhere on the forum; my search didn't yield anything comparable.

When I boot the machine chimes and a splash screen comes up as usual.  Then something goes wrong; instead of continuing tomy desktop the machine reboots itself, chiming again and taking me to a menu with three or four choices (ordinary start, advanced options, memory test, etc.).  After it sits on that screen for a minute or so (the hardware doesn't recognize my newer aluminum Apple keyboard during the boot so I can't make a selection) it lurches back to life and completes the trek to my desktop.

The problem occurs every time I restart or otherwise boot from off to on.  Once I get to my desktop things work as they should.  Any advice for resolving this?

What happens if you boot an earlier kernel ?

[EDIT]

Oh you're going to have trouble doing that if you can't use your keyboard at the GRUB screen ???

Have you got another keyboard you could use for testing ?

Turns out it was only solved temporarily; the problem recurred after recent updates were installed (not sure which update triggered it, but it was sometime in the past week).  I ran the command again, but booting still takes me to the menu after failing a first time.  In case it is useful for diagnosing what's going on (and because it contains some sort of warning), here's what printed when I run the update:

Code: [Select]
kim@kim-iMac ~ $ sudo update-grub
[sudo] password for kim:
Generating grub configuration file ...
Warning: Setting GRUB_TIMEOUT to a non-zero value when GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT is set is no longer supported.

My guess is that you will get this every time a new kernel is released. Could you please give us the output of
Code: [Select]
df -h

and
Code: [Select]
uname -r

and
Code: [Select]
dpkg -l | grep linux-image

Could be that you are running out of space on your boot partition, you seem to have all the old kernels left.
Let's try to get rid of the ones you don't need, but first give us the output from the commands above, so we can do it without any issues.

Hi kimtoufectls,
This is going to take some time, but here we go...
You are currently running the 4.10.0-38 kernel, I usually only keep the current plus the previous kernel. But others will advice to have three or four older kernels available just in case.
Since, we actually don't know when this happen, I would keep a few more just in case.
You can also do this using Synaptic if you would prefer that!

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get remove --purge linux-headers-4.8.0-53 linux-headers-4.8.0-53-generic linux-image-4.8.0-53-generic linux-image-extra-4.8.0-53-generic linux-headers-4.8.0-54 linux-headers-4.8.0-54-generic linux-image-4.8.0-54-generic linux-image-extra-4.8.0-54-generic linux-headers-4.8.0-56 linux-headers-4.8.0-56-generic linux-image-4.8.0-56-generic linux-image-extra-4.8.0-56-generic linux-headers-4.8.0-58 linux-headers-4.8.0-58-generic linux-image-4.8.0-58-generic linux-image-extra-4.8.0-58-generic linux-headers-4.10.0-27 linux-headers-4.10.0-27-generic linux-image-4.10.0-27-generic linux-image-extra-4.10-0-27 linux-headers-4.10.0-28 linux-headers-4.10.0-28-generic linux-image-4.10.0-28-generic linux-image-extra-4.10.0-28-generic linux-headers-4.10.0-30 linux-headers-4.10.0-30-generic linux-image-4.10.0-30-generic linux-image-extra-4.10.0-30-generic linux-headers-4.10.0-32 linux-headers-4.10.0-32-generic linux-image-4.10.0-32-generic linux-image-extra-4.10.0-32-generic

Doing this you will be keeping the 4.10.0-33, 4.10.0-35, 4-10-0-37 and the current 4.10.0-38 kernels.
Now, once again run

Code: [Select]
sudo update-grub

Hopefully, it will reboot as it should now.

After this, could you please post the output of

Code: [Select]
dpkg -l | grep 4.8.0

and

Code: [Select]
dpkg -l | grep 4.10.0

Regards,

Thanks for the help; it seems to have worked.  Here's the terminal output you requested.  Is my old iMac/32-bit OS/ancient Intel chip the issue or is something else breaking my boot (and can I do anything about it short of abandoning the hardware)?

If you want to clean up your old kernels, open a terminal and copy/paste this super long command into it:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get remove --purge linux-headers-4.8.0-53 linux-headers-4.8.0-53-generic linux-headers-4.8.0-54 linux-headers-4.8.0-54-generic linux-headers-4.8.0-56 linux-headers-4.8.0-56-generic linux-headers-4.8.0-58 linux-headers-4.8.0-58-generic linux-image-4.8.0-53-generic linux-image-4.8.0-54-generic linux-image-4.8.0-56-generic linux-image-4.8.0-58-generic linux-image-extra-4.8.0-53-generic linux-image-extra-4.8.0-54-generic linux-image-extra-4.8.0-56-generic linux-image-extra-4.8.0-58-generic linux-headers-4.10.0-27 linux-headers-4.10.0-27-generic linux-headers-4.10.0-28 linux-headers-4.10.0-28-generic linux-headers-4.10.0-30 linux-headers-4.10.0-30-generic linux-headers-4.10.0-32 linux-headers-4.10.0-32-generic linux-headers-4.10.0-33 linux-headers-4.10.0-33-generic linux-image-4.10.0-27-generic linux-image-4.10.0-28-generic linux-image-4.10.0-30-generic linux-image-4.10.0-32-generic linux-image-4.10.0-33-generic linux-image-extra-4.10.0-27-generic linux-image-extra-4.10.0-28-generic linux-image-extra-4.10.0-30-generic linux-image-extra-4.10.0-32-generic linux-image-extra-4.10.0-33-generic
then hit the enter key to run it.

enter your password when prompted, and hit enter again.

Once the command has run,  post the output from:
Code: [Select]
dpkg -l | grep 4.8.0
and
Code: [Select]
dpkg -l | grep 4.10.0
again

[EDIT]

Is the weird boot behaviour a new thing ? .. if so, when did it start ?

I didn't experience the "weird boot" at all in P7, but as this thread shows it cropped up under P8 in late September and then again in the past week or so.

You still have all those old kernels. How...?
Try to remove them with the "very long command".

I ran "the long command" as requested yesterday and reported success:

Thanks for the help; it seems to have worked.

In that same post I provided the result of the commands you asked about.

You are asking "How...?" of someone who is asking the community for the answer to exactly that question, so I've nothing to offer.

I guess you misunderstood me... sorry  :(
I know you have reported success.
The thing is, that running
Code: [Select]
dpkg -l | grep 4.8.0
should have returned no answers. If it does, the kernels are still there. Let's try with only one to see what happens.
Please run
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get remove --purge linux-headers-4.8.0-53 linux-headers-4.8.0-53-generic linux-image-4.8.0-53-generic linux-image-extra-4.8.0-53-generic
Now after this running
Code: [Select]
dpkg -l | grep 4.8.0-53
should return no answer.
Let me know if this works. We are all here to help.
Although, I would not advise to this just yet, if you want to remove all the kernels and keep only the latest it's much easier.
Code: [Select]
uname -r
Gives you the kernel you are currently running. If everything is working on this kernel, then we could remove all the others using
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get autoremove
followed by
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get autoclean
and
Code: [Select]
sudo update-grub
