Smartphone Software???
« on: August 31, 2017, 12:46:45 pm »
Greetings! Weird question, but one that I'm sure a non-noob such as myself would love sinking his/her teeth into.

I have an Apple iPhone 4 and the hardware works great, but I'm having increasing software problems. I've heard tell that there's a way to install a Linux based operating system onto a SmartPhone. I'm hesitant to try this without some guidance from someone whose done this as my smartphone is my only phone and I don't want to ruin it and be forced to buy a new one (this is what I'm trying to avoid by getting new software installed).

Help? Anyone? Thanks!

Installing Linux on your phone is not something to undertake lightly.

It's complicated on many levels.

I would not try this myself, but I wish you all the best.

Hummmmm... maybe I'll just keep my iPhone after I get my new one and experiment at that point. Unless someone has any other suggestions???

Is anyone using the Meizu 5 Pro Ubtuntu with their Linux desktop? When my trusty iPhone 4 finally dies, I'm seriously looking into getting this one.

You might want to read this first:

UBports are supposed to be forking Ubuntu Touch:

but I'm not sure how they're getting on.

Thanks for the info, everyone. Just an update... Doing a factory reset on my iPhone 4 did wonders for it and I found an app (OPlayer) that allows me to transfer files pretty easily over my WiFi connection. I think this'll tide me over until Linux phones take over the world.
