"Authentication token manipulation error" is nearly always caused by the file system still being mounted as read-only when you attempt to change the password.

Are you sure you followed the instructions fully .. including the bit where you remount the partition read/write ?
WARNING: You are logged into reality as 'root' .. logging in as 'insane' is the only safe option.

positive... and it doesn't work... is the command still
Code: [Select]
mount -o rw,remount /
I've done this three times in a row this morning, once with sudo in front and all three times was told the password was successfully changed... but when trying to log in... the new password is not accepeted...

also, the wifi dong'e stuff isn't working in the guest session... I'm about to erase ssd and start from scratch...

I give up... am checking SSD for errors and reinstalling P8 today from scratch.  System froze in the motherboard's boot options screen 3x in a row... One last attempt to correct password failed again.  I'm  so done triaging endlessly...
