Just a curious thought
« on: August 24, 2017, 05:47:29 am »
I was thinking the other day,  :-\
What steps I need to take to upgrade to Peppermint 9 next year? , I assume this may be the next LTS based  version ;)
Not that I would have to but I like to move along from LTS to LTS.
At the moment I am running Peppermint 7.

But it got me looking at what needs to be done, and more importantly it got me looking at what I uninstalled when I first moved to Peppermint OS.
I remember removing VLC, Software Manager, and the ICE stuff.
Not that they bothered anything I just don't use these applications so I took them off. Preference mostly  ;)

Which brings me to my discussion topic. Have you guys ever considered rather than having pre-installed software instead use a welcome dialog that gives the user a choice to install all standard software (Peppermint Suite if you will) or install nothing.

I know Peppermint is already light and has minimum applications as it is.
I mean come on what do I have to complain about, I only had to uninstall three applications LOL  ::) right....
Even still I had the urge to ask this question.  :D

I am just looking for thoughts and opinions.
Thanks in Advance

We can't remove those 3 things because remember the ISO is not just an installation media, it needs to be functional in "Live" mode.

If we removed VLC the Live session would have no media player

If we removed ICE the Live session would have no graphics manipulation app, or games, or user guide, or Google drive for an office suite, etc.

If we removed Software Manager we'd only have Synaptic which isn't very noob friendly.

Peppermint is pretty much as barebones as you get and still have a functional Live session.  If you stripped even the basic stuff, you'd have more like the MiniMe releases that PCLinuxOS used to do.  They literally came with the base OS and a desktop, nothing extra.  To even have the most basic functionality, you had to install and immediately start putting software on it.  Not bad if you like that kind of thing, but also not beginner friendly.  (that's why they also had a full release)

Hi graficsinc, I like your curiosity. We need to keep asking questions.

What do you use instead of vlc?

Ablosultely, questions and suggestions are ALWAYS welcome, it's the only way Peppermint can progress :)

To be honest this particular build  is my development box. It mostly has the dev tools that I use daily (IDE,Database, Web front etc.....) most importantly my music player  ;)
That would be  Clementine: https://www.clementine-player.org/
Ran into this a few years back, I dunno....... it really stuck with me, LOL I guess it's the logo that intrigued me. :D
With that said, I don't really do any video watching other than "YouTube" on this build.
