questions on hosts file... [reSOLVED]
« on: August 07, 2017, 04:45:26 pm »
Hey one and all... since things are running smoothly, I thought I'd take a stab at unblocking a few pages from my etc/hosts file... I have long used the hosts file from www.someonewhocares.org and added a few pages of my own that I never want to see. Typing this sentence reminds me that I have posted about this previously, but this is a different query. Now I want to make sure I am not unnecessarily blocking the various peppermint pages and I need to get my access to ancestry.com sorted once again. Assuming the keys are tied to the google.analytics domains which I currently have blocked...

Is there a question in there somewhere spence ?

::)Sorry, guess I "thought" the question but didn't "type" the question....  Despite whitelisting the forum, something about my hosts file is still blocking all your advertizing... So I guess I need to #comment out a few lines of my hosts file to allow some of that back in.

Same for getting Ancestry pages to allow me to log in... so I am guessing these lines all need to be #commented out

Code: [Select]

127.0.0.1 google-analytics.com
127.0.0.1 googleads.g.doubleclick.net
127.0.0.1 googleads.g.doubleclick.net
127.0.0.1 adservices.google.com

along perhaps with a few more...

You'd probably be better off using something like the browser plugin 'uBlock Origin' as an ad blocker .. it's then easy to whitelist specific websites.

I wouldn't be without uBlock Origin .. I just block everything except a few sites I want to contribute to as a matter of principle (those I whitelist and click an advert every once in a while), any other sites I may just arrive at via say a link or suggestion if I enjoy the content but doubt I'll return I temporarily unblock, click on an advert, then re-block.

I adhere to a "help pay if I enjoyed the content" model, rather than a "pay just for arriving" model .. I mean why should I help a site I didn't enjoy, or don't feel offered me any value.

I don't want to be bombarded with ads just for browsing the web, but I absolutely will help sites that have 'given me something', I think that's fair and reasonable :)

uBlock Origin allows me that choice with a click :)

well, the half dozen or so things i commented out via my hosts file opened the spigot for peppermint & ancestry.... if I understand what I'm writing uBlock will add to my current hosts file too...
