Saving passwords while using Chromium browser (SOLVED!)
« on: July 01, 2014, 05:37:05 pm »
I want to have Chromium store passwords for me.  Is there something I do in Chromium or do I have to install an app??

I have gone to the "three bar icon" >Settings>Advanced Settings and enabled "Offer to save passwords I enter on the web.".  It still doesn't ask to save any passwords for sites.

Sorry - Linux Newbie.  Will probably have a bunch of questions.    :D

Is it not saving passwords for ANY site .. or just SOME ?

Some websites tell the browser to set "Autocomplete=off" .. the browser will then not offer to save your password.

There is a Chrome/Chromium extension that automatically toggles "Autocomplete=on" when visiting one of these sites

Here it is:
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/autocomplete-on/ecpgkdflcnofdbbkiggklcfmgbnbabhh

see if that helps.

Unfortunately, it didn't seem to work when I logged on just now.

I closed and re-opened the Chromium browser in case it needed a re-start.  Still didn't work.

Or I'm doing something goofy!   ;D

An interesting thing - when I go to log on to a web site, my log in name comes up but my password does not.   :-\ :-\

In chromium, clcik the little 3 bar icon, then go to "Settings" .. scroll to the bottom and click "Show advanced settings" .. scroll down a bit and clcik "manage saved passwords"

Is anything listed under "Never Saved" ?

Nothing is listed under either saved passwords or never save.

Hello gclark...

If you're interested in options I can vouch for LastPass. I've been using it for about two years and I've never had a problem.

Thank you Scott!  Is an app like LastPass required to get the password saving to work?  :-\

No it shouldn't be necessary .. but it's a workaround.

There's a possibility that the password database in chromium is corrupt .. we can rename the chromium config directory if you like (it will then be recreated) but you'll loose any customisation/bookmarks/passwords/etc.)

Let me know if you'd like to try that.

IAs we'l be renaming (not deleting) the cconfig directory, this  WILL be undo-able if it doesn't work.

No, LastPass (or any app as far as I'm aware) is not required to get Chromium to save passwords.

At this point (so much time already invested) I'd go ahead and try to get the password issue sorted in Chromium. Once it's working, use it for a week or three and then maybe compare it to another password saving app like LastPass.

Willing to try anything!   :(

I have tried everything I can think of or have found on Google.  Nothing works.  However, now it no longer autofills my screen name.  It does nothing in that department.   :-X

Before we start messing with the chromium configs .. Why not try Google Chrome instead

https://www.google.com/chrome/browser/

Get the .deb version for your architecture (32bit or 4bit), then just double click it to install
