Searching this forum from any DuckDuckGo search box
« on: July 27, 2017, 04:25:45 pm »
Did you know this forum has a DuckDuckGo !bang ?
https://duckduckgo.com/bang

If you want to search this forum from any DuckDuckGo search box, just precede the search term with !pmos

So if you go to either our start page:
https://start.peppermintos.com
or the DDG start page:
https://duckduckgo.com/
or any other DDG search field .. then enter, for example:-
Code: [Select]
!pmos test
and hit enter you will be forwarded to this forum and the search run here.

In fact it would be pretty easy to add this bang to the whiskermenu .. so you could run forum searches directly from the whiskermenu search box 8)

That's so cool  8).  I use bangs a lot.  They're one of the things that make DuckDuckGo a great search engine.  I didn't even think to try and find a Peppermint one.  You have to add this to the Whisker menu.  I can't think of any distro that has this facility  ;).

Yep it'll be going in all future versions of Peppermint, but I can't add it retropsectively to current installs.

I can tell you how to manually add it though if you wish ?

[EDIT]

Right click the "Menu" button and select:-

Code: [Select]
Properties > Search Action (tab)

click the "Add" button (+)

In the "Details" section add:-
Code: [Select]
Name: Peppermint Forum
Pattern: !pmos
Command: exo-open --launch WebBrowser https://forum.peppermintos.com/index.php?action=search2&search=%u

Click the "Close" button.

Now click the "Menu" button, and in the whiskermenu search field type
!pmos test
and hit enter.

Do you mean in a less than Ubuntu's approach with Amazon and Unity searches...?   ;)

Do you mean in a less than Ubuntu's approach with Amazon and Unity searches...?   ;)

This is VERY different to the Ubuntu Amazon lens.

All this does it send the search query to the forums search engine via a DDG search .. it sends ZERO search queries unless you specifically add the !pmos bang.

This is not a local search query that also sends that query to third parties, and it doesn't even go to DDG and this forum unless you specifically tell it to each time.

All this does is fire up your web browser and search the forum .. it couldn''t be more different that the Unity Amazon lens ::)

What you type into the whiskermenu search will NEVER go online unless you specifically tell it to pass the search to your web browser with the "!pmos" bang .. the whiskermenu search is NOT capable of going online itself, it just fires up your browser if and ONLY if you tell it to EACH TIME.

ZERO info will leave the whiskermenu search field unless you "accidentally" precede it with the !bang .. and there's little chance of that happening accidentally (besides which it shows you it's going to do it before you hit enter) .. it's as likely to happen accidentally as you accidentally opening your browser and running a search. Also remember this search is run ONLY on this forums search function, DDG only forward it .. and DDG are all about privacy anyway.

Cheers Mark, that works a treat  ;).  It's surprising how many people use DuckDuckGo without knowing about the Bangs.  It's such a cool feature.  The one I use the most is for Google images, !gi.

Okay Mark,  I choose to believe you. 100% blind faith, as I have chosen to with my motorcycle (wonder guru, Terry) mechanic, and Alan (bicycle) tech. On these tech matters. Though I'm disabled these days and wish I could.   :D

Actually I've now changed the whiskermenu command above .. now it doesn't even go via DDG it simply goes directly to this forums search engine.

You may as well .. considering I have access to the update repos, if you don't feel you can trust me you REALLY shouldn't be using Peppermint because I can modify stuff on your system via updates, unless of course you never accept updates, or audit update code .. and even then you'd have to trust I'd not added some 'nasty' to the original ISO ;)

That does beg the question - what exactly were you doing in Bristol that caused you to leave without them ?
