Might be best to just sell it with PCLOS

This is as far it got in systemd shutdown. With init mode, it got the h nearly touching the u ..... the whole system seemed nervous and twetchy.   ::)

So, that left PCLOS and Devuan. I went for Devuan, with a netinstall, Xfce, LXDE and Mate are their choice of desktops. This (Xfce) does and will boot up (diagnostic rash) and cleanly shutdown and reboot properly.

As you can see, I've tidied up the diagnostic rash of bug this and this bug, by adding "noapic" to grub.confg, to get rid of the mp-bios bug 8524 no apic I/O. But this throw up "nobody cared, try "irqpoll" at boot. Added irqpoll to grub.conf, cleaning up rash.  ;). Now the CP or GPU needs firmware specifically the ati-radeon b43 driver. Read a few horror stories. Pointers please   8)

No worries mate .. something tells me that even though it looks in fantastic condition it was always going to be a tough sell with it's spec anyway.

Has the BIOS not got an SLIC key allowing you to bung Windows back on it legitimately ?

Have you tried Peppermint 6 ?

I've meet virtually all objectives with this project.

Could I pull it apart, without breaking bits in the process. Not lose any of those tiny 2.5x5 screws or important component parts. Then put back together. <---- Have to give myself a pat on the back   ;)

It was a non runner, now it runs nearly pretty well. For an old coal-fired slug.   :D

What it looked like, on first boot, after getting second hand battery.

Heart attack central, it chukka, compacted, blocked heatsink and exterior fan vents.

As this afternoon, hardwired ethernet works, just b43 wifi messing me about, though PCLOS have gaven me several b43 firmware, so don't know.

I'm chalking it up to experience, as I said virtually all objectives meet, bar a sale.     8)  +   :-\   Know a lot more than I did than last week.    :D

Yep, it has a windies 10 pro license.

Peppermint 6 **might** run on it, and still has a couple of years left in it.

Peppermint 6 was based on 14.04 so doesn't use systemd .. just a thought.
(and being an LTS will be supported until 2019)

Downside is no OEM install though.

What's the output from:
Code: [Select]
sudo lshw -C network
and
Code: [Select]
lspci -vnn | grep -i net
and
Code: [Select]
rfkill list
you'll obviously need to copy the output to another PC to post it (unless you can connect with an ethernet cable).
