I'd be really disappointed in a cheap laptop. So I'm going to try and talk you off that ledge.

Have you considered building a desktop yourself with premium parts? My main rig is 6 years old and still the fastest computer I've used due to two minor upgrades in that time.

You could invest roughly $600 in a really sweet rig.

I already did that 5 years ago.  I'm running it now.  However, it's hard to take a desktop with you anywhere, especially this beast.  I put it in an Antec 600 gaming case.

scifidude79,

You might want to look at this as an option - the Pinebook.  Probably not what you're looking for but just in case I thought I'd show it to you.    I understand it comes with Linux Mate.

Thanks a lot!  I'll check it out during my bus ride to work.  It certainly meets my criteria of being small and affordable.  8)

That's an interesting little budget notebook (in two sizes), but I doubt if the 1.2GHz processor would handle much graphics rendering. Or it would take a very long time indeed...  ;)

ARM based, so no Peppermint here .. but if all you want is web browsing/etc.

Also, cast an eye over the order/delivery details .. order in May, get by Aug from Hong Kong, so may also require import duties.
(I'm only mentioning this because I've been stung before by import duties .. and there are plenty of Android lappies for similar prices already available over here, so probably the same over there)

The truly troublesome part is the 30-day warranty, when most computers come with at least a year.  That tells me a lot about the company.  If they had any faith in their product, that warranty would be longer.  That, the lead time and the incompatibility with Peppermint are not good for me.  But I appreciate the suggestion.

If I want something similar, I can get one of these from work or order it and have it at my house in two days:

At least I'm familiar with the OS it comes with.  ;)

I understand your concerns and knew it was not a slam dunk.  Just an option to take a look at.

As I said, I appreciate the suggestion.  It meets all of my criteria, it's small, cheap and Linux based.  Just not quite what I'm looking for.

Perhaps try one of those Windows 10 Chromebook "Killers" (which is a term I use very loosely.)

Honestly I don't expect any to run Linux very well so you may want to dig through some forum threads see what other users have had success with. I expect the boot loaders to be a pain in the ass like they are with Chromebooks.

Once again, I appreciate the suggestions.  8)

Lenovo and Acer are certainly possibilities.  I've heard good things about Lenovo, and I've used Acer in the past.  I used to have an Acer desktop, it was the fist computer I ran Linux on.  (good memories)  I haven't looked at their budget laptops in a while, so it's a about time I had a look.

However, two brands I won't touch are HP and ASUS.  HP used to be good, but these days their quality is all over the map.  (good printers, not so good computers)  As for ASUS, I already have a low end laptop from 2012 from them and I'm not impressed.  It doesn't even run Peppermint as well as it should, it can't even play videos in fullscreen without laboring.  However, far worse, the plastic of the case is extremely cheap.  It feels like, with minimal effort, I could crush the plastic around the DVD drive with my hand, which is a bad thing.  I've read in reviews of their tablets and laptops where others have had issue with their plastics.  So, they're off my radar.

It's looking more and more like I'm going to wind up buying a Windows computer or a Chromebook and changing the OS to something much better, Peppermint.  Thanks a lot for the ideas, everyone.  :)

Heh, I just found a 13" Dell in the outlet with Ubuntu 16.04 on it.

Quote
Tech Specs
Processor: Intel Celeron 3865U Processor (Dual Core, 1.80GHz, 2MB cache,15W)
Ubuntu Linux 16.04
128GB 2.5-Inch SATA Class 20 Solid State Drive
4GB DDR4 Non-ECC SDRAM 2400MHz (1X4G)
13.3inch HDF (1366 x 768) Non-Touch LCD
Intel HD Graphics
Black - LCD Back Cover (Non Touch)
Dell Outlet Latitude 13 - 3380 Laptop

Only $264.  Not too shabby.  Of course, I can't afford to buy right now, but still not bad.
