[SOLVED] Ethernet sharing via wifi on an old Imac.
« on: June 29, 2014, 08:15:35 pm »
I'm not sure if this is possible or not but I thought it was worth asking.

I just installed Peppermint 5 on my ancient Imac.

On the Imac I can share my ethernet connection via wifi with internet connection sharing.

I just want to know if this is also possible on Peppermint 5......

(I'm about ten attempts in to the key Captcha now and it keeps saying I'm wrong.  I have no idea what half the pictures are supposed to be!!!)

Key captch only has to be done once .. then you'll never see it again :)

Funny, I can always make out the pics .. I wonder if this is a resolution issue .. what resolution are you using ?

Internet wifi sharing -

You might want to check this out:
http://www.webupd8.org/2013/06/how-to-set-up-wireless-hotspot-access.html
pay special attention to warning to downgrade hostapd in 14.04 (Peppermint 5 is based on 14.04)

If you require further assistance .. just ask :)

My resolution was set to whatever it was when I first installed this Peppermint 5.  I just checked, and it showed as 1440x900 @89.9 refresh rate....

Anyway, thanks for the link.

I tried to do as it said, but when I tried to start the hotspot it said "Your wireless card or driver does not support Access Point mode."  Bit strange as the hardware allows me to do it on OSX.  I guess it's just not meant to be.  I'll still use PM more than OSX though I think!

Thanks for your help. :)

It'll be a driver issue .. but there may be a proprietary driver available...

What's the output from:
Code: [Select]
sudo lshw -C network
and
Code: [Select]
lspci -vnn | grep -i net
and
Code: [Select]
lsusb

OK, there ARE proprietary drivers available .. dunno if they'll help, but do you want to give them a try ?

If so, run:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt install build-essential linux-headers-generic dkms
OK, that's the build prerequisites installed, now for the drive:-

First we need to check that the "restricted" repo is enabled .. go to
menu > Preferences > Software & Updates
and on the "Peppermint Software" tab, make sure
Proprietary drivers for devices (restricted)
is ticked .. then close that window.

Now back in the terminal run:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt update
then
Code: [Select]
sudo apt install bcmwl-kernel-source
then unload the b43 wireless drivers with
Code: [Select]
sudo modprobe -r b43
and load the wl driver with
Code: [Select]
sudo modprobe wl
then post the output from
Code: [Select]
sudo lshw -C network
back here

then reboot

then post the output from:
Code: [Select]
sudo lshw -C network
again .. so I can see if the wl drivers were indeed being used, and if they survived a reboot.

You know, you just reminded me I have an old buffalo wireless router at home. I wonder if that'll work in my office.... It'd make connecting everything much easier.... Hmmm.. Will test tomorrow!

Thanks for all the suggestions!

Not sure if this is in any way related, but when I power up PM5 without the ethernet cable, no wifi networks show as available, so even with my wifi router up and running (and a laptop running linux connected to it, as well as an ipad and iphone) I still can't do everything i wanted to.

Anybody any idea why wifi networks aren't showing up at all?

I'm going to guess that hotspot software changed something

can you post the contents of
Code: [Select]
gedit /etc/network/interfaces
