Okay I think I went insane there for a moment, I could have sworn your evdev key mapping was set to 218 for Print, in fact I thought I double checked it .. but now I go back and read it again it says 107 ???

Let's check again .. what's the contents of:
Code: [Select]
pluma /usr/share/X11/xkb/keycodes/evdev
WARNING: You are logged into reality as 'root' .. logging in as 'insane' is the only safe option.

Yep I definitely went loopy there for a moment ::)

Can you reboot whilst I type up some instructions .. it's important you reboot before following the instructions, so reboot and come back here and tell me you've done it

Before we go any further, post the output from:
Code: [Select]
setxkbmap -print
again .. your earlier output seems to be missing a bit.

I don't think I've ever messed with any of these files previously...  so no clue about what's missing unless my collectors are about to blow Cap'n !?!
Code: [Select]
xkb_keymap {
xkb_keycodes  { include "evdev+aliases(qwerty)" };
xkb_types     { include "complete" };
xkb_compat    { include "complete" };
xkb_symbols   { include "pc+us+inet(evdev)+group(lalt_lshift_toggle)" };
xkb_geometry  { include "pc(pc105)" };

Are you SURE that's ALL the output, because I was expecting
Code: [Select]
xkb_keymap {
xkb_keycodes  { include "evdev+aliases(qwerty)" };
xkb_types     { include "complete" };
xkb_compat    { include "complete" };
xkb_symbols   { include "pc+gb+inet(evdev)+group(lalt_lshift_toggle)" };
xkb_geometry  { include "pc(pc105)" };
};
Note the closing curly bracket/brace and semicolon in mine.

yep, here's the complete screen...

Code: [Select]
spence@hpG6 ~ $ setxkbmap -print
xkb_keymap {
xkb_keycodes  { include "evdev+aliases(qwerty)" };
xkb_types     { include "complete" };
xkb_compat    { include "complete" };
xkb_symbols   { include "pc+us+inet(evdev)+group(lalt_lshift_toggle)" };
xkb_geometry  { include "pc(pc105)" };
};
spence@hpG6 ~ $

ahhh, guess i clipped it a wee bit first go round...

Okay then, run:
Code: [Select]
sudo pluma /usr/share/X11/xkb/spence-keycodes
and when a BLANK file opens, make it read:
Code: [Select]
xkb_keymap {
xkb_keycodes  { include "evdev+aliases(qwerty)" };
xkb_types     { include "complete" };
xkb_compat    { include "complete" };
xkb_symbols   { include "pc+us+inet(evdev)+group(lalt_lshift_toggle)" };
xkb_geometry  { include "pc(pc105)" };
};
SAVE the file and exit pluma.

Back in the terminal run:
Code: [Select]
sudo pluma /usr/share/X11/xkb/keycodes/evdev
find the line that reads:-
Code: [Select]
	<PRSC> = 107;
and change it to read
Code: [Select]
	<PRSC> = 218;
then find the line that reads
Code: [Select]
	<I218> = 218;	// #define KEY_PRINT               210
an change it to read:-
Code: [Select]
	alias <I218> = <PRSC>;	// #define KEY_PRINT               210
SAVE the file and exit pluma
back in the terminal run:
Code: [Select]
sudo rm -f /var/lib/xkb/*.xkm
then
Code: [Select]
xkbcomp /usr/share/X11/xkb/spence-keycodes $DISPLAY
you'll probably get a ton of warnings, but that's okay as long as there's no errors.

Now REBOOT.

Now test the PrtSc leaves a screenshot on your desktop.

:-\  i rather figured it was yet another one of those things from a movie or show I've never seen...  though I know the mark of the beast reference...  :(

In other news... the pool party was a blast but my head is pounding...

and finally, I can now  get screenshots... youDaMan  :-*

I suppose the New Users forum was the wrong place for this thread... I'll let you decide where it should go...

Okay moved it to "Hardware" and renamed the topic to better reflect the issue and point out the fix is for SOME (mainly HP) laptops ONLY .. THIS IS NOT A GENERIC FIX FOR EVERYONE, BUT IS HARDWARE SPECIFIC.

Anyway, glad it's now working spence .. but you gotta stop kissing me, our beards will tangle :))
