The screen on my wife's computer, a Toshiba Satellite, is dimming frequently when connected to Wi-Fi.

Her computer has Peppermint Five as her only operating system.   She claims this problem did not occur before when her computer's only operating system was Peppermint 4.

Is there a simple fix to this nuisance she is experiencing?

We need to keep moving the mouse, or maybe touch a key, to keep the screen from dimming.

Thank you,

perknh

Now, I've followed these instructions, and have added and saved this code:

But still the laptops screen keeps dimming after a short period of time.

I will remove the check from the Monitor Power Management Control in the Xfce Power Manager.

I'll give that a try.

Are you absolutely SURE this is connected to having an active wifi connection ?

Turn off your router .. does it still do it ?

Unload your wireless drivers:
Code: [Select]
sudo modprobe -r ath9k
does it still do it ?

You can reload the wireless drivers with:
Code: [Select]
sudo modprobe ath9k

Hello PCNetSpec,

Yes, I'm sure her computer was connected to an active Wi-Fi connection.  It's our home's Wi-Fi through a very active and secure TP-LINK Modem/Router.

We have no battery in her computer, and we're not connected to any other Wi-Fi source in our neighborhood.

I just configured the ath9k driver.  As you said, it can't hurt.

PCNetSpec, don't you think my removal of the check next to the Monitor Power Management Control, found in the Xfce Power Manager, could do the trick?  I'm wondering now if the solution could be that simple.

I'll find out the next time she goes online.

I'll be happy to unload and reload the drivers if that doesn't work.  I'll keep working at this until we fix it.

Thank you for the new commands.

I'll bookmark this page, and I'll report the results after she goes back online.

Thank you,

perknh

Sure it could be that simple ;)

try right-clicking the xfce4-power-manager icon in the system tray (by the clock) and selecting "Properties"

Then go to
On AC > Monitors (tab)

and move the "Brightness" slider all the way to the left.

I'm just not 100% sure this is connected to wireless .. so want to know how it behaves without a wireless connection.

Something else has just dawned on me .. are you sure this isn't just a graphics problem with the new Aura Chromium browser ?

Does it misbehave when using Firefox ?

Well, my wife uses Chrome browser (Stable edition), and not our default Chromium browser.  We have not installed Firefox browser from the software manager.

I forgot to check the brightness scale of her monitor.  I'll do that now....

Yes, the monitor was set to dim in 30 seconds.  I bet you hit the nail on the head.  That's got to be what the problem was.     :)

And now I've gone back and placed a check back in the box next Monitor Power Management Control.  I suspect I never needed to un-check that box in the first place.

Thank you, PCNetSpec.

I'm considering this issue solved.
