Installing PMOS via 700 MB CDs
« on: June 16, 2017, 02:44:44 pm »
I have an old desktop with a Core 2 Duo and an Nvidia GTS 450 which I don't really want to replace now. It currently runs Vista which reached EOL this April, so I want  to install some Linux distro on it.

So far, so typical. Unfortunately, the BIOS only allows booting from disks and CDs! It didn't recognize a Knoppix image on a USB stick and I doubt it will recognize PMOS8 either. Which means I'll have to install PMOS in a different way, but I'm not sure how.

I have an Ubuntu 9.04 CD that boots on the PC. Do you think I can use it to partition the drive and
Code: [Select]
cat
PMOS from a USB on it? My fall-back idea is Debian net-install which is tiny and can definitely be fit onto the 700 MB CD, but I'm going to leave that PC to my family members who aren't tech savy and I'd rather not have them do
Code: [Select]
sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade
every week.

Can you not just put Peppermint on a DVD-R ?

If needed maybe there's e a way of booting from usb, there is an application called Plop that can boot old machines from various sources even if the bios does not have support for it.

Video tutorial:

It can be downloaded here. There are instructions inside the downloaded file.
