Maps of Linux use around the world?
« on: June 04, 2017, 07:55:15 am »
New member here, a couple of weeks old PM8 on a spare machine, older Dell Vostro!
Daily runner is another box running Mint, but PM may get a promotion :)

I am curious about which parts of the world uses Linux (penetration level) and what distributions are running.

The idea just came to me as I looked up the forum member list and expected to see some indication of location. I am in Eastern Massachusetts, USA, so there maybe a good many PM users around me!

Welcome aboard, moussy !

Not sure about market penetration.  Mark sees the DL stats, so he's a better source for that info.

I can tell you, users are spread all over the globe, based on the IPs I see in these forums.

And, staff is pretty equally divided between North America and Europe.

Put another way, Peppermint is a global enterprise.

BTW, I'm located in the Great American Southwest.  ;)

Welcome to the forum, moussy.
It's hard to determine how accurate it is but here's something that might help answer your question: CHECK IT OUT

I could only provide pretty useless and very general stats for Peppermint.

By "very general" I mean stats THAT GOOGLE ANALYTICS KNOWS ABOUT (because of their advert tracking) .. we ourselves don't track anything, not even download count I'm afraid.

So I have no way of knowing who uses Peppermint and where they're from beyond some very general stats about visitors to the webpages that carry adverts and if they click on those adverts (from Google) .. it's not our policy to head count ;)

I suppose if we really wanted to we could trawl through the server logs for IP's but we don't .. in fact the logs are rotated out regularly so even if I wanted I could only get a general picture for a short period.

This is not a "look how good we are, we don't track you" policy .. it's simply that we have no use for the info. ;)

Hi moussy,

It's a great question.  When people's Windows OSes go down, they call their ISPs to help them fix the matter.  But why aren't the ISPs down too?  Because they running Linux! ;)

Since this is so, I've never understood why don't take the time to install Linux on their computers too.  But clearly not too many people do. (Perhaps Estonia is a hot spot for the Linux desktop! ;D ) As Linus Torvalds says, people use whatever OSes that come pre-installed on their devices.

Welcome to Peppermint!

I tell a lie .. I've just remembered we do have the AWStats log file analyzer, so I could have access to some general stats if I wanted.

BTW, I'm intrigued by this:-

I am in Eastern Massachusetts, USA, so there maybe a good many PM users around me!

Can I ask what made you say that ?

Well, Eastern Massachusetts has, I think, a fairly high-density tech sector, as well as a large "edu" population, leading to a likely higher than normal interest in Linux.
The local (beloved) Boston Computer Society was one of the largest computer user groups.
