Screen tearing problem: a quick and easy fix! (SOLVED)
« on: June 01, 2017, 02:20:27 pm »
I'm posting this because many have annoying screen tearing problems, something like this:

and that can be easily solved, either on Intel or AMD cards. All you gotta do is the following.

First you gotta identify you hardware. Open the terminal and type:
Code: [Select]
lshw -c video
Look at the "vendor:" line it will either say
Quote
vendor: Intel Corporation
or
Quote
vendor: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI]

Now just follow the steps according to your card vendor.

For Intel cards

1. Open the terminal

2. Install mesa-utils:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install mesa-utils
3. Create a specific directory:
Code: [Select]
sudo mkdir /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/
4. Enter these parameters:
Code: [Select]
echo -e 'Section "Device"\n Identifier "Intel Graphics"\n Driver "Intel"\n Option "AccelMethod" "sna"\n Option "TearFree" "true"\nEndSection' | sudo tee /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf
That's it. Reboot and it should be ok now.

If you wanna undo this procedure just enter in the terminal:
Code: [Select]
sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf

For AMD cards

1. Open the terminal

2. Install mesa-utils:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install mesa-utils
3. Create a specific directory:
Code: [Select]
sudo mkdir /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/
4. Enter these parameters:
Code: [Select]
echo -e 'Section "Device" Identifier "Radeon" Driver "radeon" Option "TearFree" "on" EndSection' | sudo tee /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-amd.conf
That's it. Reboot and it should be ok now.

If you wanna undo this procedure just enter in the terminal:
Code: [Select]
sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-amd.conf
