Peppermint 8 - New Installation - failing to shutdown
« on: May 31, 2017, 03:13:24 pm »
Evening all - well many congratulations to all involved on the latest edition in the Peppermint evolution - very, very nice  :)
I tried it for a while as a live USB then which seemed fine, a lot of work 'under the hood' so to speak, especially with the settings.  Although I was having a problem with the shutdown, which I thought was a USB problem  (I've had some glitches with USB on this machine), basically it hangs & I had to do a couple of hard shutdowns. However I couldn't resist & did a full install in place of my Pepp 7 - it was too good to resist & there seemed to be a marked improvement in the video quality, most notably screen-tearing, which was a problem in Pepp 7 for me.
I spent an hour or so installing & tweaking how I like & come to shutdown & the same problem is occurring as with the live USB - its just hanging on the shutdown splash screen with about the progress bar about 5% done so I had to do another hard shutdown :(
I have booted back in & it appears that all what I did has stuck with no issues (fingers crossed) - in fact I am typing this in Pepp 8 now  ;)
Obviously I can't go on like this but I don't know what to do about it - any thoughts?
Cheers  :)

When it appears to hang at shutdown, can you hit the "Esc" key and see if anything is being displayed onscreen ?

No nothing when press 'Esc' - had done it before but just tried again same thing happening - the power led is on & wifi but the activity led is totally dormant - this seems a constant issue not a glitch - it does it every time so far. I pretty sure the iso was ok  - I did GPG verification on it & it was confirmed fine.
Would there be a log that might point towards whats happening?  :-\

Have you tried leaving it for 3 minutes to see if it eventually shuts down .. I had the same issue when I'd mounted some NAS shares with cifs over wireless .. it did eventually shut down, but it took 2 minutes for systemd to give up waiting for a response to an umount command that was never going to come because it had already taken down wireless ::)

I'm not suggesting this as a solution .. just for diagnostics

Hmmm well I've  shutdown twice since install now - both with the same issue, however the first time I left the lappy running for over half an hour before I decided to bite the bullet  :-X
And while I cant be 100% sure for the first time on the second occasion I shut everything down apart from Dropbox
Just going to knock off now so this the third time - wish me luck lol ::)

I wonder if
Code: [Select]
sudo shutdown -P now
would shut it down fully ?

Well breaking news - just whacked the USB  stick back in & booted into live & soon as desktop was up I shutdown - & hey presto it did - therefore I deduce my dear PCNetSpec its probably sumat I've done so let the games begin lol  >:(
Good thing is it was playing up the same way on shutdown after I had been in live environment - done a few tweaks & then shutdown - so I  suppose it's a process of elimination if I can remember what I did  lol  :-\

So this is what I have found so far:
If I boot into liveUSB it will shutdown fine if go direct to the logoff menu & shutdown or or shutdown directly from the terminal but if I carry out any other action (open apps i.e. Nemo or edit menu etc.) then the shutdown problem occurs.
The shutdown problem always occurs if I boot into my Pepp 8 install regardless of whether I go direct to the logoff menu & shutdown or or shutdown directly from the terminal - it also occurs if I shutdown from the login screen directly from boot.
I have booted into safemode from the grub screen, done a fsck, then normal boot out of there & then I could shutdown ok from the login screen.

Despite me verifying my iso (torrent) download I decided to do a fresh (direct) download of the Pepp 8 iso, verify it & write it to the USB stick - however the problem still occurs. What Im going to do now is write the Pepp 7 iso to the USB stick & see if it occurs then (which didn't happen before)

Another developement - had a few apps open including chromium with with 6 tabs open - one was internet radio -  I was searching for an icon browsing through multiple images in another tab when everything crashed with the screen freezing to what I can only describe as vertical green stripes. Tried  Crtl-Alt-t, Crtl-Alt-Del, Esc, REISUB, & Crtl-Alt-F3  - nothing so had to do yet another hard shutdown  >:(
Also when in chromium when maximising from the panel the screen quite often goes momentarily fuzzy - the CPU appears to be working a lot harder &, probably as a consequence, fan is also going like billy'o, something that I have seen reported in another post recently.  :-\

Good morning - well as I said  I wrote the Pepp 7 iso to the USB stick booted into it - had a play around & then shutdown with no issues. I am experiencing a number of issues with pepp 8 on this old Dell Inspiron 1501 & its possibly my old, low spec hardware isn't supported too well in the new OS, which is a pity - there is lots in it I like. I don't see many other people with similar issues & as this is my sole & daily driver I'm going to revert back to pepp 7 which was pretty much rock solid for me (probably a  bit hastey in jumping in the first place - but hey a fresh install of pepp 7 will clean things up a little bit).
So unless anyone has any compelling reason why not I will revert  :)

Hi Bigoeuf, how's it going  ;)?  Thank a shame, you're probably right with your analyse.  Anyway, there's nothing wrong with Peppermint 7.  It's supported thru' April 2021.  You've also the  nice fresh reinstall  ;D.

Could you please remember to mark the topic as [SOLVED] or [ABANDONED] in the subject line of thread's first posting - many thanks  ;).

You are not alone. I had some issues getting 8 installed on my old laptop but after getting it up and running as advertised It wouldn't complete the shutdown, just like you described. Came back up fine and as I rarely shut down the computer it's no big deal but obviously something ain't right.

BTW-I just noticed while we different brands the "innards," AMD CPU etc., are very similar. Coincidence?
