Peppermint 8 Hanging during install
« on: May 30, 2017, 11:26:26 pm »
I've been trying to install 8 on my old Gateway and twice now when I get to the "restart" the shutdown begins but then hangs when the DVD door opens. I did try to do a normal boot after, just in case but after, grub it just stops.

While the laptop is a bit long in the tooth I've been running 7 Respin with no problems, both 32 and 64. on the machine so either my computer doesn't like the new Kernel or something funky is going on.

Thoughts, suggestions?

Thanx

Do you know which video card is in that machine? is it Nvidia by any chance?

When you say "it just stops" .. can you describe what you see ?

If your PC has one, is there any activity on the hard drive activity light ?

when the PC appears to "just stop" during bootup, if you hit the Esc key, is anything displayed on screen ?

When I say "just stops" that's what it does. DVD tray pops out, I remove the disc, push the tray back and from that point there is zero activity, no matter what I do. Press keys, combinations of keys, or just wait. Nothing. And no, there is no drive activity either.

Also I have no idea what video card I have but I'll try to figure it out.

I'm not talking about the shutdown after install .. what I mean is after the installation when you shutdown and the DVD pops out, if you hard shutdown by holding the power button, then switch the PC back on, when it appears to hang at bootup is there any HDD activity ?

And if you then hit the "Esc" key, is anything displayed onscreen ?

Absolutely dead after install. No matter pressing any key, nothing but the little blue light of the on button.

That said I gave 32 bit a shot and it installed flawlessly. Granted this is an older machine but I've run 64, Peppermint and others on it before and, while sometimes a bit fussy, it would fine.

Don't know if this qualifies as a solved or not.

For the time being don't mark this as solved .. we'll see if it comes up again.

As a matter of interest, did you elect to download updates during the install ? .. I don't think it would make much difference at the moment, but it might in the future when a new kernel is released.

[EDIT]

And can we please have the output from:
Code: [Select]
inxi -Fzso we can keep an eye out for a pattern if it comes up again .. TIA :)

For your perusal  here's a bit more about what I did.

multiple attempts at installing 8 both "live" and direct. First time seemed to go well but as above hung when shutting down. Several times the DVD hung before it even got to install or Live. It also hung once mid install, right after asking if I wanted updates. Along the way I ran a gparted check but no change. Finally, in case there was some wayward  file/setting messing things up  I installed an old Manjaro,, ran gparted and then installed the 32 bit Peppermint 8 from Live. Everything went smoothly but did hang again when I removed the DVD but after powering off and on 8 came right up and so far all is well.

Let's hope it stays this way, Peppermintos runs better on this machine than any other distro I've tried and am more than satisfied!

here's the output:

I'm wondering if this has the same root cause as the problem I'm having on my older computer.  Running Peppermint Six 64-bit with no problem.  My install of Peppermint Eight 64-bit did not hang like this, but neither did it run after the install completed, it just hung when rebooted.  And I have no problem with Peppermint Eight 32-bit, which installs and then boots without any problems.

For reference, my machine is also an oldie, purchased new in June of 2007.
