it used to be 'unable to establish connection' but with new development, it decided to read the localhost page after all. But the HP printer recommended in the comment is not listed. There are only  2 options: cups and serial port (it was recommended to choose HP LJ printer not the cups one)

Also new development in HP Device Manager printer discovery. The printer used to be undiscoverable, but after several power off/on's on the printer, it finally got recognized, but when I ticked 'print test page' and clicked 'add printer',  it started warming up to print, but stopped suddenly with error popups all over:

Tried on Mint, the printer is localhost discoverable, but not installed as well. But it shows a different problem when adding new priinter. It says the checksum is wrong and asks should it ignore it. I choosed no.  And the notifications are:
*************
/.hplip/hplip-3.15.2-plugin.run file does not match its checksum. File may have been corrupted or altered

The printer you are trying to setup requires a binary driver plug-in and it failed to install.
Please check your internet connection and try again.
Visit http://hplipopensource.com for more infomation.
*************
...the wifi died suddenly (while messing with the printer) on P7 but not on Mint, to boot.

USB is technically a type of serial port. Did you try installing with that option?

That shouldn't matter. I would wait for PCNetSpec's opinion before going ahead with this.

Yeah just run through those instructions again, ignoring the error on the
Code: [Select]
rm foo*that command is only there just in case you already have a version there.

I went thru the procedure (changed 1020 for 1018 model), got error message on the last one with this content:
*******
 /tmp/foo2zjs $ sudo make install-hotplug
#
# Hotplug Installation Dependencies...
#
      ***
*** Error: ex is not installed!
      ***
*** Install vim package(s) for your OS
      ***
Makefile:978: recipe for target 'install-hotplug-test' failed
make: *** [install-hotplug-test] Error 1
********

and the result:
still no printout!
But the printer is now easily discoverable, no hesitation anymore when adding new printer. It's right there in an instant. And the printer icon is green ticked, which was previously red X-ed. When I click 'print test page', no error messages, system notifies sent job to the printer, but no printout. The printer doesn't show any sign of life, no warming up, nothing.

When I went thru localhost:631 on Firefox, previously deleting the system printer (no hesitation in connecting here either) , there are only 2 options: HP printer and serial, but no CUPS one! Also, when asked to choose a driver for the model, there are two identical entries (and I know that's never good):

but neither gives actual printout, just notifications of job well done

The printer is dead when I reboot, which was never case when the printer was operational. It always showed live connection to the computer.

PCNetSpec, what to do to purge everything that has anything with printing and start from new slant?

I had to start from
Code: [Select]
axel http://foo2zjs.rkkda.com/foo2zjs.tar.gzbut this time no errors at hotplug. Result is the same, no change, no printout.
MurrayMint, how do I purge all installations connected to printing so I can try fresh?
