(Solved) Musescore/printer mistake - scalable apps.
« on: May 18, 2017, 05:44:48 pm »
OK, here's the thing. I was trying to multi-task and without thinking, I installed a printer driver while I was working in another program - MuseScore. I tried uninstalling and re-installing the program, but to no effect, it only has the choice of printing to .pdf file. Not sure if this is a MuseScore thing or if all programs act this way when you do something stupid like I did, but I really could use some help in trying to fix this. I have a hybrid system with Peppermint as the base, but with KXStudio repos for audio creation/production goodness. MuseScore comes from the KXStudio repo and is version 2.0.0 revision 6e4f7f74. My other programs seem to work fine, but they weren't open when I was installing the printer driver.

So what are you trying to do .. uninstall the printer driver ?

When you uninstalled MuseScore, did you get rid of any lingering config files for it in your home folder ? .. if not, run:
Code: [Select]
sudo updatedb
then post the output from:
Code: [Select]
locate -i musescore | grep home

Hi PCNetSpec. I tried a new install on another computer with the same repos. It turns out that KXStudio has chosen to include the first version of the Musescore 2 series, which only supports printing to .pdf as it doesn't recognize printer drivers for some reason. So, the only alternative that I can see is to create a /bin folder in my home folder and download the Appimage version of Musescore. The question now is how to get that Appimage in my system path so that it will be included in both the PeppermintOS whisker menu and Dmenu (which I use most of the time.

Is it not easier to just print the pdfs?

:) I thought about that, but as it is, I am saving scores as .mid (midi) files for importing into LMMS, which doesn't have a notation editor but which I find easy to use. Then there are the MuseScore files for separate instrument parts so that I can easily create a .mid file for an individual instrument part... I think you get the picture - with .pdf files in the mix, it gets to be one big pile of files.

With regards to Dmenu, it seems to have added the AppImage version of the app to the menu itself. I assume with the whisker menu, I will have to create a *.desktop file and it add it to /usr/share/applications.

Yup, that did it, but weirdly enough, despite the MuseScore in Nemo having an icon, nothing shows up in the whiskers menu. Not sure how this works with AppImages. Do I have to find a real .png file someplace to get an icon to appear next to the name in the whisker menu?

Peppermint 7 already has an icon for musescore at

/usr/share/icons/Peppermix-7/scalable/apps/musescore.svg

so just point the

Icon=

line in the .desktop file you created at it ;)

as in either:-
Code: [Select]
Icon=musescore
or:
Code: [Select]
Icon=/usr/share/icons/Peppermix-7/scalable/apps/musescore.svg
(the first of these 2 options would be best because the Numix icon set also has a musescore icon .. so if you switch to the Numix icon set the icon will change.
