Session does not want to start (unable to launch OS)
« on: April 11, 2017, 07:08:38 am »
Last thing i did before system corrupted - installed xbindkeys (+ sudo apt-get install xbindkeys-config).
And after a few minutes combination of keys (Alt+F2) stopped functioning after which i could not shut pc off in a classical way (launch menu) so i had to use console.
Now it says (login/passw submitted) - unable to start session (not any session).
Heelp !!

If at the login screen you hit Ctrl+Alt+F3, are you able to log on in a text mode console ?

Yes i logged in, then removed xbindkeys (and 'xbindkeys --configure' if not mistaken) but no positive changes seen.
One more thing, wi-fi passw. has changed (i use shared access) since my last successful session with OS, reason why i could not 'apt-get update'.
Is there a way out?

xbindkeys itself is supposed to be in Peppermint. You set shortcuts for it through the Peppermint Control Centre.

Now I'm lost .. if you can't log on, how do you know your wifi password has changed ?

There's a dual OS laptop i'm using (lucky to have debian still alive :) ).
I mean i know right passw for wifi but peppermint knows only the old one and i don't know how to give it access to internet via console (as long as its needed for system fix).

Do you know how to run "fsck" on the drive ?

Two things to try

a) log on in text mode, and run:
Code: [Select]
sudo touch /forcefsck
then
Code: [Select]
sudo shutdown -r now
and wait for it to reboot .. see if it "just works" after a reboot.

b) log on in text mode, and run:
Code: [Select]
sudo service lightdm restart
and post any output back there.

No, not any of available sessions start.
I'm trying to recall all my last actions to system, but i believe there was nothing excessive

Sorry Ellie but it's going to be terribly hard to offer assistance if you don't provide the information requested ;)
